Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Can anyone hear you scream in Space?
« on: 03/10/2018 13:07:52 »
Dan says:

"In space, no one can hear you scream." I think we've all heard that quote.

The sun sends light to the Earth, and although space is near absolute zero, we still feel the heat from the sun here on Earth. So light is able to travel through space and maintain its heat, right?

Much like light travels, If an astronaut screams in their space helmet, would the sound energy leave the helmet and go into space? So if another astronaut was close enough, would they be able to hear the scream?

Physiology & Medicine / How does my body adjust to hot and cold weather?
« on: 03/08/2018 10:07:24 »
Angelo wants to know:

In winter, if the temperature reaches 5 degrees C, it almost feels like short sleeve weather.  If that happens in the summer, I'll look for a heavy jacket.  What changes in my body to acclimate between the seasons?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Does hot air gain potential energy when it rises?
« on: 03/08/2018 10:03:55 »
Aditi wants to know:

If potential energy increases with height, does hot air gain energy when it rises? And in turn, does its temperature continue to increase because of the energy?

« on: 03/08/2018 09:33:24 »
Paul says:

How do card readers work? I have just googled it and even on the banks' own sites they say "They create a unique password etc etc" but not really how they work and how it makes a transaction more secure.

Cells, Microbes & Viruses / What is Necrotising faciitis, and where did it come from?
« on: 03/08/2018 09:30:49 »
Bhavesh says:

The origin of Viruses like Necrotising facitis aka 'Flesh eating bug' How long have these viruses proliferated in nature? Do animals have an immunity? When was the 1'st recorded case in medical journals? Where can they be found in nature? I read someone in U.K contracted it near a sewage outlet pipe out near sea(in recent years)! What can we do to avoid such things? Are scientists close to a cure?

Cells, Microbes & Viruses / Do blood transfusions or organ transplants change DNA structure?
« on: 03/08/2018 09:20:13 »
Garth wants to know:

It is said that only identical twins have the same DNA structure, I would like to know if one's DNA structure is compromised in any way if one receives either a blood transfusion, or if one receives an organ transplant from someone else?

« on: 03/08/2018 09:16:14 »
Donald wants to know:

If we could pull the moon to the same orbit as the ISS, how fast would the earth spin? How fast would the moon-earth rotation spin? And how high would the tides be?

« on: 03/08/2018 09:02:04 »
Mike says:

I'm on my holidays and my wife asked why doesn't the skin on my hand and feet tan? I thought it was because the skin is thicker there.

Physiology & Medicine / Could we fatten up space crew to minimise food needed for long term spaceflight?
« on: 23/07/2018 12:35:26 »
Donald wants to know:

For long-term spaceflight, would it be reasonable to really fatten up the crew so eating calories isn't necessary? Saving on food, packaging, storage, diapers, etc.

Chemistry / How does an aluminium-CH3COOH battery work?
« on: 19/07/2018 11:52:19 »
Alin says:

I have tried making an aluminium-CH3COOH battery. I have taken aluminium from a can, graphite from a special drawing pen and vinegar that you can buy from the store.  In the middle there is the graphite electrode wrapped in a tissue soaked in vinegar and everything is wrapped in aluminium. Can somebody help me understand the process? I want to know the equation that takes place.

« on: 19/07/2018 11:37:23 »
Nikolaus wants to know:

In my garden, I see blackbirds picking into the soil and (sometimes) pulling out an earthworm. On rainy days, I see hundreds of earth worms on the pavement, yet no birds taking advantage of this free all-you-can-eat buffet. How come? Can birds not recognise earthworms by shape on the roads?
