Sheep look blankly at us - does it show a blank brain?

I like to take a spare face cloth with me to use as a towel.   I then put it in the washing machine on my return home - to be included in the next wash.  I don't like being caught without a towel - or leaving a "Ladies" with damp hands!

People have been color feeding canaries since the 1930's.

Yes, I used to, in the 1970's, breed Red Factor canaries.   Their colour is helped along by feeding them carophyll red (which currently is sold mixed in feed).   Carrots also have some colouring influence for red factor canaries.  Apparently, carophyll red is also used to colour pink flamingoes - in order to replace the type of colouring food they can obtain in the wild.

General Science / Re: Is there any research on the best way to teach?
« on: 14/07/2012 12:31:05 »
I have never taught but it is easier to learn in a reasonably relaxed environment.    As I was shy when I was in a rather old-fashioned boarding school in the 1960s I had trouble learning as the policy was to instil fear into us!   Wrong!    I have learned more in the 6 subjects I took, and failed for GCE O'level.    When I re-took 2 O'levels in Evening Class at a local High School a few years after leaving school, on top of a full-time job I sailed through them as the teachers bothered to tell us things and we were more relaxed.

It should be a good idea to hold quizzes to test the pupils as the word "test" may be fearsome for some!

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Is it better to keep the underfloor heating on all the time, or use it intermittently?

It would be better to have it on low - to avoid draughts when the heat comes on.

I have this strange problem as well - and, as a woman, I don't have a prostate gland!   Could it be that some urine stays in the bladder after you have desperately "emptied" it?

Physiology & Medicine / Why do colds, and other viruses, feel worse at night?
« on: 27/05/2011 22:59:55 »
I have just been chatting on Skype with a friend who is suffering with a cold.    During the day he didn't feel too bad, almost normal, but he wonders why colds are always worse at night.     Please could you enlighten us on this?    Thanks if you can!

Geek Speak / Docx to Doc
« on: 20/05/2011 18:48:56 »
Recently I bought a new computer with Windows 7.

I do some typing for our church so had to buy the part Office package with Word 2010 as the computer didn't have Word on.   Trouble is, if I type a fresh document, which comes out as Docx our Vicar and Parish Magazine Editor cannot open my documents.   I believe they have XP or earlier.   Is there software which I can use to convert files which I send in order they are compatible with older systems?  I know there is software which a user of an older system can use to convert an incoming file from a newer system but this isn't really what I want.

Geek Speak / Calling all win7/64 SP1 users
« on: 12/04/2011 13:26:33 »
I found the solution to the problem!  A few days ago it seemed worse - even  with the latest update just being installed.    I happened to click on something then realised it was set for Windows XP even though it was freshly installed and downloaded from Skype website.    I right-clicked on the Skype desktop icon, selected Properties/Compatability then, in the Compatability mode drop-down box I clicked the little arrow to the right of the XP program then selected Windows 7 and clicked OK.  Brilliant!   My friend and I have had uninterrupted conversations ever since!

That CAN'T be true! / Will earthhour save energy?
« on: 27/03/2011 14:30:05 »
I did try to observe Earth Hour yesterday!  At 8.30 pm I turned off lights, my computer and heating.   I had a candle (run short of them -forgot I only had one!)but read a newspaper with the aid of a wind-up torch.  At 9.30 pm I went up to the kitchen to finish my washing up after my evening meal.   As I passed by my terraced house stairs I realised I had left my bedroom light on all evening since I nipped up there to bring something down which I needed earlier!

I did notice some other people weren't exactly serious about Earth Hour as I noticed a stream of headlights passing my window during the hour!

I bought a new computer with Windows 7 in January.  I installed Skype on it to chat to my friend -  this worked reasonably well on my old XP computer (which was 7 years old and otherwise having loads of errors and other problems).   Skype tends to put me "offline" after 20 minutes despite the fact my friend and I are continuing to talk.   My computer is fast so is my cable broadband.    I cannot "end call" - my friend always has  to end it for us so I can go out of Skype.

Does anyone know of a solution?  I confirm my computer is 64 bit with SP1

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What ever is gravity and how does it work?
« on: 20/03/2011 20:06:46 »
I realise gravity is a means of attracting objects to each other - we stay put on this planet due to gravity - so does most other things.    What I would like to know firstly is what causes it?

I would also like to know how objects of huge distances away can attract each other.  We have planets orbiting the sun (with moons orbiting the planets), solar systems rotating in a galaxy, galaxies rotating in a galaxy cluster, galaxy clusters rotating around each other.   How does that work?

The Environment / Is our colder weather a result of global warming?
« on: 06/02/2011 20:33:23 »
Since I posted my initial enquiry two months ago it now appears our weather in the UK (Norwich) is warmer than expected - being 11 deg C - not expected for early February!

I am curious to know why our seasons appear to be earlier - in August the weather was more like that of Autumn/Fall now it is more like Spring!  Is our planet changing the way it orbits the Sun or is it something else?

The Environment / Is our colder weather a result of global warming?
« on: 08/12/2010 08:54:13 »
I have been wondering for some time about whether the warmer weather in other countries is forcing colder weather in the UK.   It is a while since I felt uncomfortably hot in summer (certainly not this year!). I am wondering whether the effects of the Gulf Stream have been negated by the effects from other countries weather.

Technology / How does my DVD player remember where I stopped the DVD earlier?
« on: 17/10/2010 19:46:36 »
This thread may have answered my puzzle over a DVD of a film I borrowed from our local library.

In 2004 when I first bought my PC I decided to test the ability of the DVD drive  to play films (someone told me, when I first bought this computer, that it could).

I therefore borrowed a copy of the DVD from our local library.   I had to stop it as there was a fault.    When I exchanged it for another copy of the same film the DVD drive knew where I had stopped the other copy!

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Was it a Gale in 1987 or a Hurricane?
« on: 30/05/2010 14:12:17 »
I have been thinking of the event of October 1987 when we in the UK had a really strong wind.

Was it technically a hurricane, storm or gale?   I very much doubt it was technically a hurricane although it was really strong and noisy!

I have been puzzling over this for nearly 23 years since it happened and would love to know the correct answer!

Geek Speak / Why is the clock behind on my PC?
« on: 07/04/2010 21:41:04 »
Thanks for the advice.   I think my PC battery was a bit low - a few days ago I turned it on in the morning and a screen came up with the information that my CM02 battery was low and was told to hit F2 and F1 - then select something else (forgotten which) in order to continue with the usual start up.

I left the computer, unusually for me as I am normally mean with electricity use, on standby when I went out that day in order for the battery to recharge.   It seems much better now - even the time is keeping up (21:39 at moment).
