Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: How many photos are emitted by the sun every second? How many reach earth?
« on: 13/12/2016 23:29:20 »
From memory the Sun emits energy with a mass equivalent of 4.26*10^6  tons per second assuming the photons average 2eV the number comes out at approximately 10^45
But I am prepared to have my arithmetic corrected.

The eagle eyed will note I made several corrections my memory of the Suns output and the mass equivalent energy of a 2eV photon were both wrong but at least my arithmetic was OK

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Why do some dead bodies not decay?
« on: 11/12/2016 20:11:59 »
Good money was made from pilgrims visiting ancient shrines so its quite likely that some doctoring of relics took place.
Even today plenty of statues of the "blessed virgin" weep tears of blood and serious researchers are kept away from bits of the true cross and the Turin shroud

Geology, Palaeontology & Archaeology / Re: Is the Jesus Family Tomb the BIGGEST Archaeological Discovery in History?
« on: 04/12/2016 16:36:31 »
Although people survive crucifixion if they are cut down fairly quickly I would expect them to succumb to blood poisoning pretty soon

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Is anxiety causing hypertension?
« on: 01/12/2016 16:25:46 »
"we certainly don't all have hypertension".
The goal posts as to what defines hypertension are constantly lowered so that most people do have hypertension, I think there is big money made selling pills to the NHS.
I take amlodipine and suffer swollen legs but for the memory of my father of dying of stroke at 67 I would gladly give them up

That CAN'T be true! / Re: What is a jet fuel surrogate?
« on: 01/12/2016 13:22:04 »
At least you acknowledge that climate change is happening even if you have a bizarre idea as to its cause instead of the more wildly accepted explanation that it is due to the large quantity of carbon dioxide introduced into the atmosphere due to human activity.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Can we detect solar systems with Gravitational waves
« on: 17/11/2016 22:10:24 »
planetary systems emit a few hundred watts at very low frequencies while the colliding black holes that were detected emit vastly more at audio frequencies I feel that the signal from planetary systems would be way below the noise level.

It is difficult to find any exact figure for the power output from colliding black holes one value quoted was that the energy was equivalent to that of the mass of the sun spread over about one second
E=mc^2   =    2* (10^30) * (3*10^8)^2  about 1.8*10^47 Watts

The Environment / Re: Would limiting population be the best solution for climate change and violence?
« on: 23/10/2016 22:53:08 »
When I visit the USA I am always surprised what a low population density is has compared to India or China, I must write to Trump or Clinton and suggest they do something about it.

Physiology & Medicine / Re: What Would It Be Like To Take An eye Out And Look Into The Other Eye ?
« on: 23/10/2016 22:43:10 »
I was about to say the same thing there is no need to take the eyeball out of its socket a simple telescope device with prisms will do the job with less trauma.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Would there be any adverse effects due to low gravity for Mars residents?
« on: 22/09/2016 20:37:17 »
I think it would be very little of a problem although more than that from the indigenous population

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Why Do Blokes Have Nipples ?
« on: 22/09/2016 06:57:05 »
Evolution cannot help unless men without nipples produce more surviving offspring than men with them.
If an intelligent designer created human kind there were other more important details he/she could have dealt with.
I am often surprised that the American TV can display half naked men displaying prominent breasts and nipples while if a woman's nipple is shown the whole nation trembles

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Whats The Fastest Spinning Spacey Thing ?..
« on: 21/09/2016 10:35:52 »
I find the actual spin rate of the Gravity Probe B gyroscopes quoted as approximately 4000 rpm I would expect it to be much higher than that of millisecond pulsars.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Why Does Venus Spin The Other Way Round ?...and other rotational questions !
« on: 20/09/2016 17:09:54 »
In the early ages of the solar system there was a lot of interaction between the planets including collisions ,the other anomalous one is Uranus that spins on its side

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: What Is the Temperature Of a Black Hole ?
« on: 20/09/2016 14:03:29 »
Presumably a shrinking black hole would explode when its mass fell to the Planck limit 22 micrograms about one hundredth thousandth the energy of the Hiroshima bomb nothing like Hydrogen bomb levels

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Why Don't We Eat Turkey Eggs ?
« on: 16/09/2016 13:10:38 »
In the immediate post war period when food was in short supply I used to get turkey eggs that had proved infertile from a hatchery to eat they were OK.

General Science / Re: Have I built the world's first human memory erasing machine?
« on: 29/08/2016 04:46:36 »
Once you have located the target volume you wish to destroy how do you keep the brain still while you blast it ?
The assumption seems to have been made that the storage of one memory is stored in just one location this seems very unlikely to me to take the similar case of a computer if you accidentally load a rogue program  it can be very difficult to remove it completely as little bits and pieces of it are stored all over the place often with numerous copies I have an uninstalling program that hunts for remnants and often finds hundreds !

The Environment / Re: Ideas for population control?
« on: 25/03/2016 22:15:11 »
In the UK there is a very effective form of birth control i.e An obsession with owning your own house and very high house prices.
It is impossible for a married couple with only one person working to buy a house so both work and take great care not to conceive or have abortions if they do.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: If an object is moving through space and no force is applied, where does it go?
« on: 21/10/2015 12:22:03 »
This is really a question about the geometry of space , if it is flat it goes off to infinity if it is curved it comes back to where it started but what if it is saddle shaped where does it go then ?
