Physiology & Medicine / Re: Sever back pain when walking after car accident
« on: 29/06/2004 08:04:42 »
Thanks for all your postings, I have been refered to a physiotherapist, aparently the NHS is quite good at the moment, only a months wait but I think I am going to look in the the cost of a private assessment as I am finding it is getting harder to move (getting out of the bath is near impossible). This is an excellent site and I do really appreciate the advise and support.

Thank you both for your fast reply. I have never tryed things such as deep heat so i think that I will give that a go, small amount just incase it affects my asthma, i would rather weeze for an hour than have the pain though :)
I am going to look in to seeing a chiropractor or osteopath.
Thanks again for your reply. I will continue to check my posting so if anyone has any more ideas please add them. Thanks

Physiology & Medicine / Might recent severe back pain when walking be caused by a prior car accident?
« on: 23/06/2004 12:42:42 »
Nearly a year ago I was involved in a car crash where someone drove in to the back of my car wile I was stationary at approximately 45mph. I was taken to hospital on a spinal board with neck and back pain but luckily nothing was broken. I suffered some problems with my left arm/shoulder causing impaired sensations that has now been resolved with physiotherapy.
After the accident I had very very slight lower back pain when walking but it was so slight I didn’t bother wasting the doctor’s time with it. But it has gradually been getting worse and worse and I now find it very hard to even walk round a supermarket! On resting the pain subsides a grate deal. I have been examined by a GP and my physiotherapist who cannot find a reason for the pain.
Is it connected to the car accident? What could it be? X-Rays are clear!
I have been told by a friend who is a med student that the cause may never be found because the back is such a complicated thing? Can you recommend a painkiller? I am asthmatic and have problems with NSAIDS and I also don’t tolerate codeine very well.
Any help on what the pain may be would be most appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.[:)]

I guess I am anxious but I don’t know about depressed, maybe a bit but only since I have been feeling ill.

As for the blood tests the only thing brought up in them was the low folic acid and vitamin B12. Even by taking the tablets they are not rising.

I have never had anxiety attacks and my appetite is fine. I am always hungry but feel so ill from eating I guess I am not eating as much as I did which, like you said is responsible for my weight loss.

I would say I am very happy apart from feeling ill I have a very good life. Lovely fiancée, nice house a job I really enjoy. I did have hobbies. I was a trampolining coach but now throw up after 5 minutes on a trampoline. I still play ice hockey when I feel ok. We would love to think about having a child next but with my folic acid level as low as it is I guess it would be a silly thing to do now.

I just want to go back to normal. I went back to work last week even though I was still signed off sick but found I was so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open by lunch time.

I have exotic pets (Royal Pythons, Corn snakes and Geckos) they are rescued and I rehabilitate them. I have had them all checked for exotic diseases.

My doctor has moved my next appointment with the gastro doctor at the hospital forward (its tomorrow), I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all the advice

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Nerve Damage after Whiplash + CIDP
« on: 05/04/2004 11:03:53 »
I had my appendix removed and was fine for 2/3 days then I got a nasty infection in the wound. I was discharged from hospital be readmitted by my GP 5 days after the operation. I started to feel weak, my legs tingling and herd to so-ordinate. I had a CT scan, a test where they put things on your legs and try and make them twitch, I think it was called a nerve conduction test but I'm not sure. Then I had a needle put in my spine and they tested the liquid they got out (I had 4 of these in total). I was given drugs, one was a drug that suppressed my immune system which made me feel really ill I also had a transfusion of some kind, but it was not a blood transfusion. I ended up staying in hospitals for 21 weeks. I was in my local hospital but was transferred after about the first two week to a different hospital (Southampton). I had loads and loads of physio and would possible say that I still have a slight weakness in my left leg but not totally sure. As far as I am aware it was a sure diagnosis of CIDP but I was only 17/18 and too scared to pay much notice to what the doctors were saying.

Hi, thanks for all your replies. My dad has a thyroid disorder, so I will get that checked out. In answer to your questions, I get very heavy and painful periods. Yeas I am anemic, have a low folic acid level and low vitamin B12 level in my last 3 blood tests. No I’m not a parent yet (my partner and I would love to try but thought it best to wait till my stomach was better, especially as I have a low folic acid level and he is concerned about his health – see recent posting on his behalf). I tend to eat little and often mainly consisting of bland food (chicken, rice, vegetables…) I don’t chew gum and never really have. I don’t drink alcohol at all but I do smoke (10-12 a day). I suppose in a way I have pushed myself hard. I finished my A’ levels in 2000 (biology, chemistry, psychology and law) decided to wait to go to university and started work but I have been signed off for the last 5 weeks for the above problem.
I take medication; Zantac 75mg 3 times a day, Donperidone 10mg 3 times a day, Folic acid 5mg each day and about 11 months ago I was told to take the contraceptive pill but taking it for 3 months, having a period and repeating, this seemed to help.
I recently got a second opinion from an American internet doctor. He suggested Endometriosis, Bowl cancer, adhesions after my appendix was removed and even a swelling on my brain causing me to feel sick! Is this all true? He said he could provide more information for a further fee. Am I just being scammed?

Thanks for your reply. I am only assuming that the altered sensation in my hand is connected to my neck injury. The physio I saw said that where my upper left rib was knocked out of place it was pressing on the nerves to my hand and although my rib is now back in the correct place my nerves may still be damaged and take several months to completely recover. I had CIDP in 2000 after having a burst appendix and nasty post op infection. I do not know much about CIDP, I was always scared to look it up! And when I did look it up it just confused me. (My scientific knowledge only goes to A level Biology and Chemistry and that was a few years ago) Could the CIDP come back several times during my life then?

Physiology & Medicine / Teenage Brain Haemorrhage
« on: 05/04/2004 08:38:58 »
This posing is on behalf of my partner. He is 25 years of age and suffers from asthma and a few allergies (dust pollen) but apart from that now seems all fit and healthy.
When he was 14 he had a brain haemorrhage. All he can remember of the event if feeling sick, dizzy and not being able to stand up. He woke 3 weeks later in a hospital bed, remained there for another 8 weeks and then had to have 12 months off school learning to walk, talk read and write again he was told that it effected his cerebellum. Physically he is 98% fit now, he can walk and talk, read and write. He does have slightly impaired hand eye co-ordination. Hear comes the embarrassing bit. He has trouble controlling his erections, it pops up at the most inappropriate time and from what he remembers has done ever since he was ill. His theory (based on what he has read on the internet) is that the cerebellum is very close to the pituitary gland and that maybe his pituitary gland was affected too. Can anyone confirm this or offer him any advice? He is now also worried that he may be Infertile due to all the scans he had.

Physiology & Medicine / Nerve Damage after Whiplash + CIDP
« on: 02/04/2004 12:19:36 »
In October 2003 someone drove in to the back of me. I was taken to hospital on a spinal board but was told I only had whiplash (thankfully). My GP referred me for physio and the physio told me that my top left rib was out of place. I have had 2 months of manipulation to get it back in the right place, which it now is but I still have altered sensation in my left are and hand. It feels like I have a glove on my hand all the time, I can’t feel things properly when I pick them up and I keep dropping things. My physio says it should get better but he hasn’t told me what it is and will it really get better? And what has caused it? I had CIDP in 2000 but made a full recovery could it all be related?

For the last 18 months I have been feeling constantly sick and tired (I can sleep for up to 18 hours a day). It worsens after eating and first thing in the morning. I also feel as if I have a lump in my throat all the time. In the last 3 months I have lost over 2 stone in weight not through lack of eating. I also have extreme stomach pains mainly on the left side just below my ribs and around the groin area. The pain worsens when I am having a period. I have had lots of blood tests that show I have a low folic acid level and a low vitamin B12 level. I also had an endoscopy in June 2003 which was normal. I have been tested for Ceoliacs and Chrons but both tests came back negative. I currently take 5mg Folic Acid a day along with Domperidone 10mg and Zankac 75mg 3 times a day. Stemitl 5mg as and when required. I saw a specialist and they said I had IBS and gave me Buscopan tablets but they made me 10 times worse.
I am stuck on what to do next. I cannot go on like this; I am unable to do my job. If any one has any advice I would really appreciate it.
