Deviation from a perfect sine wave creates additional frequencies other than that of the fundamental-frequency driving the system.
Any additional frequencies which don't have nodes which coincide with those of the fundamental-frequency, will quickly be damped-out of existence.
So only harmonics, (i.e integer-multiples of the fundamental-frequency), persist.
