Geek Speak / Which is better value to carry my genealogical work. A memory stiick or laptop?
« on: 30/09/2008 13:21:21 »
I am considering buying either a laptop or a memory stick for 2 reasons;
 [:-\]

1. A laptop or a memory stick both with an USB plug thingy to carry some of the Genealogical Researches that I have been doing since the start of this year.

2. Also because since August, I've been offline for around a month and if I bought a wireless one, then I'd only have to re-charge either a laptop or the memory stick.

I have seen both but mainly on Amazon or when a relative owns both.

Any advice is welcome, but please no techy jargon, I don't understand it.

Thank you, Rosalind

Physiology & Medicine / Is the 'flu jab effective at preventing 'flu infection?
« on: 27/09/2008 00:10:12 »
I have been wondering whether or not to accept another flu jab this year, because I had my first Flu jab last year.

But I had the most bad colds (6) that I have ever had in my life before although I take Vitamin C with it.
Now that works to enact my own immune system's anti-bodies.

Is this year's flu virus jab taken from 2007's (for example)?
If this so then how much use is that jab.

Geek Speak / What type of Free Anti-Spyware do you know of?
« on: 07/09/2008 20:54:28 »
Rosalind's present Anti-spyware is Enigma Softwware's SpyHunter only since
I forgot to tell the relevant company about the change in my email address
that they are asking me to re register.

I have the Windows Firewall and AV on the PC which is fine but I am interested in looking at other Free Anti-Spyware software programs,
that's if you know of any??

I spent hours of this Sunday trying to sort out the SpyHunter problem to no effect or success.

Thanks

Geek Speak / Has anyone used the new Google Chrome browser?
« on: 03/09/2008 11:00:23 »
I have looked at the latest Google Chrome browser's information thing
only I would be interested to know if anyone has either used it or tried it out.

Also if you have used the Google Chrome browser is it any faster than the
ordinary Google search engine, which Rosalind uses all the time.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / What do Entomologists do?
« on: 29/08/2008 18:27:21 »
As I've mentioned on TNS before I think. I am researching my family's trees well I've come across an Entomologist, who was an expert in Nomenclature of insects.

Only I don't really know what an Entomologist, Insect specialist does?

It'd help my researches, thanks

Physiology & Medicine / More people with Epilepsy are at risk of drowning
« on: 26/08/2008 12:21:49 »
As this article says that more people with Epilepsy are at risk of drowning becauswe the seizures can come without enough warning to get out of the water.

Specially if it's deep water or in a crowded pool but if the individual takes a friend with them then their lives are safer I think.

Rosalind can't swim.

Geek Speak / Why did my Windows XP computer lock me out?
« on: 22/08/2008 16:53:00 »
Earlier today, I left my XP Computer on and when I had returned to it then I
was "locked" out of my own PC. I was asked to type in the account P/W but
I don't have it.

I have searched the workings of my PC carefully, My computer, control Panel bits, even the device manager, but nothing.

When it had locked me out then the taskbar had vanished with browsers, files,
icons so all I could see was my Monitor's wallpaper.
Yesterday I had changed ISPs from BT to Virgin Media, which has disabled the
Windows AV but that I can sort out somehow

How can I fix this to stop it occuring again?

Just Chat! / Rosalind is online at home at last PHEW - Wow
« on: 21/08/2008 12:31:37 »
This morning the Virgin Media engineers came and set up the cable for me
so WOW I am online in my home.

It is a relief not to have to walk down the road to use the internet and I'll
be able to use my own genealogical work again. Tomorrow probably.

It feels great.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Are all types of jellyfish venemous?
« on: 18/08/2008 16:04:33 »
I have heard a lot about poisonous jellyfish on the UK's coastal shores mainly recently but as the Gulf
Stream might be behind it all as this link/story says:

But are all the different types of Jellyfish Poisonous?

If there are some non-toxic jellyfish, what type are they? Also what part of the world do they mainly live?

Technology / New Broadband installation = Will I lose present data on my PC?
« on: 13/08/2008 15:12:52 »
On Thursday week, 21st Auguat, I will have Virgin Media installed as my new broadband provider by one of their
engineers.

During the installation process, will I lose all or some of the data, files and programs that are in my home
PC?

Also what exactly will the engineer do for me as the installation process?

It's never happened for me in the past when I had BT.

Just Chat! / Rosalind's computer access problemes
« on: 01/08/2008 15:50:08 »
I have more computer access problems and yes I do know how to fix the router, computer and filter only my present broadband provider disagrees.

I spent most of a very frustrating Friday on the phone to
BT and I will Definitely be changing providers soon.

So if I'm not online for a bit that's why also I'm in my
local library for 1 hour.

Physiology & Medicine / Are the Spanish Flu Epidemic and H5N1 Bird Flu related medically?
« on: 29/07/2008 11:44:03 »
I wonder if you could help me answer a question that I've been thinking about for a few years, it's this:

I do know just how fatal the Spanish Flu epidemic was at the end of the First World War because the people, who died were undernourished so that more people died from Spanish Flu epidemic than in the actual war itself.

Also I've heard that the H5N1 bird flu might be from the same or similar bacterial viruse that the Spanish Flu came from, is this true??

Including an aunt of mine, (Elsie Duval on 1/1/1919, she was the wife of Hugh Franklin).

Thanks Rosalind

Physiology & Medicine / What causes Pneumonia?
« on: 22/07/2008 12:56:33 »
I have known that Pneumonia exists in some people/patients but I don't know
about any of the causes for it affecting certain people.

Are they from every age range or just the elderly?

Also how does low Blood Pressure and other things affect Pneumonia?
In what proportion of the population can it be fatal?

Geek Speak / What is Realtek Audio Manager? I do have Windows Media Player
« on: 16/07/2008 10:07:24 »
I have searched in my XP computer for the "Realtek Audio Manager" but it doesn't have a single file or component for it.

I do have and use the Windows Media Player also the Quicktime thing.

As last year I had some Malware/Viruses/Trojans which I deleted because of that I'm cautious about clicking on unfamiliar things.

Geology, Palaeontology & Archaeology / Why have there been so many BIG QUAKES this year??
« on: 12/06/2008 16:01:25 »
I have noticed that there have been up today's big quake in Crete, Greece
where there was another BIG quake and that is the 2nd one in Europe also it's
on 3 tectonic plates (Eurasian, African and the Arabian plates)

But does anyone happen to know why there have been more big quakes this year than there have been in the past few years, what with the Burmese one also the Chinese Cyclone (I know it's different).

Geek Speak / Website Addresses/Hyperlinks - How do I make some of them shorter??
« on: 01/06/2008 18:22:13 »
Quite often I don't use a website address that I happen to like a lot because it's too long for a post of this size.

I would like to know how to shorten it to make the Website Address/Hyperlink
to show "Rosalind Franklin" basically just a brief message to explain what it
is about.
