Why is this ex-veggie now craving chicken?
« on: 02/07/2004 23:20:17 »
so, whats that all about?! Veggie for 10 years (ok, I ate fish, so I was actually a pescean or something equally pesky) then decided to make life easy for the parents and in-laws last christmas and eat chicken at the christmas dinner table. since then I just can't get enough of the stuff. sometimes i have to have it twice a day. even mcDonalds Chicken sandwhiches will do (once I've scraped the gunk off). I've recently taken to cooking drumsticks and taking them to work for lunch.

does anyone have a rational explanation? have I subjected myself to 10 years of some kind of nutrient deficiency? or is it because I actually always have liked chicken (but was put off my a bloody-in-middle chicken breast [xx(]) and so have deprived myself, and now I'm making up for lost time?

or now that I've gone without meat for so long, is it actually bad for me to eat it, perhaps my body has got used to it not being in my diet and doesn't make enough of the necessary enzymes to digest it. I say this because I've heard that you often crave things that you shouldn't eat.

and I'm not pregnant!![:)]

there are better meats, chicken is a little dry... maybe getting some other meats on the go might help... I suggest a roast pork dinner with very crispy crackling OR duck with Hoi Sin sauce in wraps with spring onion and cucumber!!!

Hmmmm !!...KFC.....yum yummy yum yum......Place a roast chicken on some half onions or potatoes (or any other root vegetable to lift it off the base of a roasting pan) and put half a pint of stock in the pan and roast as normal......sweet tender moist and delicious !!..it works even better with Turkey which can be extremely dry.....but Lindsay....I think you've just rediscovered the taste of meat.....as far as I know there is just no substitute for it.....especially from a texture point of view.

Hmm, glad I've just eaten, Chicken again. saturday night chinese take-away, sweet and sour chicken balls, chicken with cashew nuts and rice. mmm. nice and full now and incapable of drooling over food any more!

I never liked pork, lamb or beef though, so I don't feel tempted by them.

so you think it is just a rediscovery thing, and that I'll grow out of it?

Your body was probably deprived of a few amino acids that you weren't getting enough of through your veggie diet that are present in chicken.  Once you got a nice influx of them, you craved more.  It's good for you.  The real downside to meat eating is in the red meats, so if you stick to chicken and fish, you'll be healthy.

Hehe- i like variety too neil- that's why i'm sooo glad i'm Chinese! It means i get a variety of dishes when i'm at home, and i can cook chinese when i'm at uni too!

If you like the Chinese here, you'll love it more in China - so many weird and wonderful things to try, so much cheaper (you wouldn't believe!) and tastes better too!

Fishytails - when was the last time you had lamb/beef/pork? You should try it again sometime, but make sure you go to a nice restaurant or something and get urself a nice beef steak. Chicken is bottom of the pile in the meat world (in my opinion) - you should definately try the others again!

Havn't had pork since student days, same for beef - could only eat the mince in shepherd pie or something. can't remember the last time i had lamb, just don't like it. same for ham and bacon. the smell of a bacon sandwich in the morning is enough to make me feel extremely ill.

that was a LOT of food Neil!! I hope that was for more than one person! four dishes are far too much for two of us usually, unless our chinese gives out huge portions?!

I was a veggie for 12 years (I also ate fish) and then stopped half way through uni because I was being a bit lazy which what I ate and not getting the right vitamins etc.. When I went back to eating meat I ate bacon, peperami and pork at every opportunity. went mad of the stuff. I did also eat an awful lot of chicken. It was the novelty of not being able to tase it for so long.

This was about two years ago, and now I don't crave it as much as I did when I first gave up being veggie. I never really like heavier meats like lamb and beef too often because they are so heavy and as a veggie you often eat a lot of light foods like vegetables and salad which you get used to. Chicken is very light so perhaps that it why  you can eat so much of it. It was soooo nice to be able to go into KFC again....mmmm

so I've got another 18 months to go before i stop craving chicken like a mad woman?

not really a fan of KFC. too much coating i think, and too greasy. roast chicken, made by my mum of course, is the best way to eat it!

I Know Lindsay, it was way too much, (it was for two)...but unless they do it in half portions I have no choice as I like the variety so much....but...as Rich said....although I don't have it for breakfast !! it does make a good snack later on and heats up well in the microwave !!!

There was this one restaurant which we went to,( it was designated stop over on a tour that we were on), and I have to say that the food was quite dull on this occassion....but the worse thing was that some of the poultry we were eating looked like little sparrows or starlings !! !!..needless to say we didn't eat very much of it !!!!

Perhaps the cats had eaten the sparrows before the pussies were caught and cooked...
