which cut flowers last the longest?
« on: 22/11/2007 15:03:25 »
You know the routine, the relationship lasts just longer than the flowers (if you are lucky). To improve the odds and have a longer relationship what flowers should one buy?

what cut flowers last the longest in a vase of water?

Just make sure if you put them in the vase to strip most of the leaves back as that causes a problem with any flower if they get all soggy and wet! What kind does she like???

Interestingly, I've got a cut crabapple branch with lots of little applets hanging off it
in a vase since.... erm.... approx 1 month now!  [;D]

that's the longest I've *ever* had anything (cut that is of course)

I have heard from florists that if you pull the stamens out of cut Lillies they will last longer.

I heard that that was to reduce the staining that is possible from the pollen.

There are plenty of cut flowers that can last for many months - there are some very pretty thistles and grasses as well as other flowers that dry very well, and retain much of their original colour (though not scent).

Carnations, definitely - but I'm told (by a woman) that they don't count as flowers.

Orchids, though not cheap, do last a very long time.

The main thing with cut flowers is to make sure there is no leaf in the water, keep the water fresh and keep the flowers in a very cool or cold room away from direct sunlight.

Is she saying that they don't qualify as good flowers to receive as a gift, or that they are in actual fact not flowers at all?

Oh, they're flowers alright - it's just that they don't 'repair the damage' in the same way that roses or lilies are supposed to. Possibly because they're cheap.

Carnations are just something you give to your mother in law, no wife or girlfriend wants those!

I have had spider mums last for a couple of weeks, and they're pretty.

I love carnation and mixed bouquets they are beautiful! I love roses also... but roses, carnations, zinnias, pin cushion's.. daisies ..I love  daffodil's, lilies,
everything basically just love flowers of all varieties and would always welcome them.. especially the ones that smell so fragrant!

Your correct about the staining.. also if you refrigerate your lilies and flowers during the night.. or put them out in the protected cold at night.. they will last longer.

In all the years I have been married I never ever received flowers as an apology or a way to make amends .. very rarely even got an I'm sorry..

Any flowers are nice...but simply receiving a nice hug and I love you would have sufficed on many occasions... Hindsight is an awful thing sometimes... so is foresight!

Hi
Alstroemeria has a long vase life of up to two weeks and this Alstromeria are available in a wide variety of colors, and some are streaked with contrasting colors..
And Chrysanthemums are long-lasting, with a vase life of one to three weeks.
Freesia is a fragrant flower, funnel shaped, and branches off the main stem asymmetrically. Freesia is available in many colors and has a seven- to 10-day vase life....These three are best long vase life flowers ....
