hi everybody,


You always see in cartoons that when someone gets a knock on the head they often see stars or in cartoon terminology perhaps some birdies fying around the head...Now, my daughter (2 years today !) just decided it would be funny to hit me over the head with one of her new dollys (cos she's well excited and we just had cakey!!!..anybody want some?)...errrhmm...anyway, after picking myself up and sharing in the laughter that I was the subject of, I couldn't help but notice sparkly things in the periphery of my vision.  It only lasted a 30 seconds or so....and sometimes, it also occurs when I have a real big yawn and stretch...so, why do we see stars in our head after sudden impacts etc ?

I have only ever seen stars once from banging my head when i had a catastrophic fall whilst snowboarding. Man i felt sick and had an awful headache for the rest of the day! With the speeds i travel at on my board these days i thought it prudent to buy a helmet but my Bro and Sarah beat me to it with one for xmas! nice one guys!

If you take a hard enough blow to the back of the head, this brain area bangs against back of your skull. This stimulates it and you can see stars and flashing lights.  Each hemisphere processes half the visual information, so a jolt to the skull cross wires the brain sending a disrupted visual image to the central lobe.  Like shakeing a camera when your taking a picture?

A neurologist might be able to clear things up!

I gather the blow would be the same sort of reason I didn't hear anything for a few seconds when I took an axe kick to the top of my head during a taekwondo tournament a few years back? that had me seeing stars and feeling very disoriented for a little while.

Wow I bet you were seeing stars!  The other dude must have been really flexable  to get his foot that high.

Oh yeah he was flexible, mind you so was I back then. The other thing is he was also a good half foot taller than me as well so that helped a lot. Damn fast as well, thankfully it was the last time I had to fight him.
