My friend has had many epileptic fits. About 3-4 in a couple of months!

I was also curious about what these were. So I did a bit of research on Wikipedia!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. These seizures are transient signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy at any one time. Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medication, although surgery may be considered in difficult cases. Not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong some forms are confined to particular stages of childhood. Epilepsy should not be understood as a single disorder, but rather as a group of syndromes with vastly divergent symptoms but all involving episodic abnormal electrical activity in the brain

This seems to be a very good description indeed! [:D]

I have no idea whether the flashing should trigger this!!

"These seizures are transient signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain."

But maybe the flashing are abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain?

Your welcome.. I don't understand it either.. Oh that game was virtual boy.. not game boy.. hee hee.. I get em confused..

I wonder is it has to do with the neurons and synapses, (Oh I spelled that wrong..I think) the point where the they meet I think it makes like an electrical connection as it is mylenated.. Maybe it causes a short as it interrupts that process of coating the memory of the action.. maybe it causes a hitch at the connection...??? I Am not sure but it is interesting~!

I do have epilepsy and any type of flashing lights can be a trigger for my seizures/fits as you may be aware that when
a newsreader warns us the public of flashing lights and if you're epileptic to look away.

Well I hide my head in the sofa to stop that happening. Even just flashing lights from the Police, Fire-engines and Ambulances make me turn my head away.

It is to do with the nerve cells in our heads using the Static electricity a bit like a light bulb fuses just when it goes.
Taking medicine doesn't always work but then taking Vitamin C for a cold won't always stop it.

Seany thank you and I think but I am not sure that reason for the flashing lights be a trigger for my fits is because it's the sudden movement of lights. For example when we see an emergency vehicle's lights passing in the street. They could start me off also the camera's flash to my face does that.
Not my camera's flash.
Just ask away and I'll do my best to answer if I can.

I think it's to do with the fact that the flashing lights trigger bursts of neural activity in the optic nerve and other associated brain areas. If this is at the right (well, wrong, I guess) frequency, it can cause synchronous firing of other groups of nerves and so a seizure. Does that make sense?

Yes Rosy you are correct 100%,also you found the words that I was searching for. Thanks.
Seizures are so scarey because I don't know when they come and then I go unconsccious.

ROSALIND ...I think that's a fantastic idea......I can't think of anyone better suited to author it rather than yourself......after all.......you have an intimate knowledge of the symptoms....and your first hand experience, and perhaps a chronological time-line/report as to how this came to be with you would be awesome !!....whajafink ?

Is it true that people with very bad epilepcy have to have parts of their brain removed to stop them going into a chain of fits that can be life threatening?

I'd love to know why as well and think it is also to do with frequency.

Although I'm not epileptic flashing lights or things like travelling in a car with the sun flashing between the trees triggers a rapid migraine. Some fluorescent lights and yes, camera flashes also do the same.

I'm not sure if migraine and epilepsy have a link but it seems strange that some of the "triggers" are the same.

It would be good to read your experiences Rosalind as there are several things I would like to ask.

By the way I helped save someone once who had a fit in the jacuzzi. He was sat right next to me. one minute we were chatting and the next he just stopped and starred of into space. Luckily my Mum was a special needs nurse so I'd seen some one going into a seizure before. I Just grabbed his head as he was about to slide down into the water.

Make it Lady, yes that is true, but not me. My brain is the same as it always been and just changed with age.
Fits can be life-threatening because as I've heard that if they go on for longer than 15-30 minutes they can life-threatening or stop the person's breath in some but rare cases. Cause heart-attacks.
None of these symptoms bother me. Thanks for asking.

Neil yes I will do that thread sometime before the end of this spring.

That Mad Man, thanks for your question but sorry I do not know anything about Migraines except that you feel nauseous(sp) and can't stand bright lights. I did have a late friend who'd had migraines but that was years ago.
Yes they may well have a link. I wish that I could help you. I will research it first. As my Rosalind Franklin thread shows that I do my reserch well.

Well done, Make it Lady and you should feel proud of yourself by saving that man's life.

This happens to me too, especially the sun flashing between the trees.  That makes me really ill, migraine, nauseousness and sometimes feel like I'm going to pass out.  I've mentioned it to several friends and family and none of them have this problem, nor have ever heard of it with the exception of my nurse friend and she insisted that I may have some form of epilepsy, but I blew it off because I've never had any other symptoms.

Carolyn sorry to hear about this and no I don't want to tell you what  to do but I would recommend that you go to your family doctor and then she/he might be able to diagnose this for you.
But you are right about the very bright sunlight and the flashing lights. When I have to walk down one of the local hills near my home there is a fence made out of railings and I always hope that is a grey day but otherwise it flashes so I have to turn my head away. Thanks

Seany thanks and it is fine

When I do my epilepsy thread, I was thinking about adding the basics of first aid for a person, who's having an epileptic seizure/fit but I only know about the Uk methods for First Aid.

I would like to add the US First Aid but I am not sure what to do.
