How Is Toughened Glass Made ?

Dear Glassologists,

See these glass shelves supporting weighty equipment ?

[attachment=2897]

There's no metal mesh in those shelves !...and they can in fact hold up to 100kg !

Is it because they are thick ?..(about 10mm).....or is there something else added to the glass to make it so tough ?...Is there an ' ultimate tough glass ' out there ?

It's transparent I want an answer !  *groan [::)]*

Hears is one patent design for tempering glass.

'triplex' and other strengthened glasses are made using a sandwich of glass with a layer of strong, clear plastic in between. It doesn't shatter and it doesn't scratch easily.

a glass is made toughened by increasing its thickness and by forming it into layers with a minute potential space b/w each layer.

The drinking glass in front of me is toughened but its only a couple of mm thick.
I know a few ways of toughening glass, none of them involve having spaces in it.
