Is it better on cell phone battery (well any battery) to let it go completely dead then charge it just charge it when it still has some type of charge? When I say better, I mean improve the lifetime per charge and the over all life time. The laptop manuel says to leave it plugged in as much as possible when in use, but I can't find anything for the cell phone. I've heard rumors, but I'd just like to clear this up.

Thanks Sim  [:)]

It depends entirely upon what sort of battery technology is used.
NiCads are much better run down completely then charged completely or they develop 'memory' and lose capacity. The newer types are much more tolerant.

I gather for li-ion batts you shouldn't run them right down.

Mine is a lithium ion battery. So I shouldn't run it down to charge it?

You can run right down recharge a few times and it restores the original battery memory. Done it with lead batteries also.

Science is continually evolving. Nothing is set in stone. Question everything and everyone. Always consider vested interests as a reason for miss-direction. But most of all explore and find answers that you are comfortable with

A lead acid battery will seldom survive discharge down to below half its stated capacity. I reckon we should 'have em' on trades descriptions, actually. The so-called deep cycle versions are better but don't supply the same peak current. Lead acid is great if you don't actually have to carry it around. NiFe are even more rugged but heavier still for their capacity.

Charge when low not dead.
