I have a laptop that the USB ports have stopped working in XP. The failure causes high system CPU usage even when the system is at idle. The USB controllers can not be disabled in device manager, but when I suspend them using Process Explorer, the CPU usage returns to normal.

I tested the USB ports in Linux and found that 2 out of 3 are fully operational. The problem seems to be on the mainboard. I can easily live with 2 USB ports if only I could get them running in XP.

Any help with a workaround for my problem would be greatly appreciated.

BTW the computer is a Toshiba P30, and I am confident to carry out work on the main board if required.

Before you get the soldering iron out, check the driver software controlling your USB ports.

I have a fresh copy of xp installed, and tried the Toshiba supplied recovery disks, my research points to USB drivers being built into xp. If this is not the case, what are the recommended USB drivers to use?
