Rosalind Franklin was my first cousin and one my life's main regrets is that I never met this brilliant and beautiful lady.
She discovered the Single DNA Helix in 1953, then it was taken by Wilkins without her knowledge or agreeement.

No, we'll shot anyone, especially if there is money in it.

I've always fancied having one of those really large cheque books. You know, like the use for charity cheques. It would be fun to write one at the supermarket check out when a queue has built up.

Shouldn't this threawd be changed to "how many tanks do the Russians need to take over
a democratic country?" (Georgia/S. Ossetia).

I think way too many. They've committed an international crime and deny it of course

Actually Georgia did start it BUT there has been fighting between Georgia and the South Osetians (-3, SP) along their common border every August since 2004. This August the Russians were ready to invade Georgia and send the message to the eastern Europeans and other former USSR Republics - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan that their sovereignty was still at the pleasure of the Russian state.

The reason this is important actually should be paramount in our attention: OIL. We are all familiar with the Baku region and its importance to the Russians during WW II. But Kazakhstan, located as it is between Russia and China, is the main prize. HUGH oil discoveries, potentially as large as the Saudi reserves, exist in this former part of the USSR and Russia wants this place back.

The importance to us of all of this - the conflict presently going on; Russian tanks now rolling south along the Black Sea coast south of Poti, rolling towards Sup'sa (the seaport where one of the main pipelines from Baku ends,) taking up positions around Tblisi: all of this is of paramount importance to the collective Western Powers. It is analogous to the times when Nevil Chamberlain cam back from Czechoslovakia and said something to the effect "What does a small little state far away matter to us?" The consequences of that statement and all it carried with it in political apathy still haunts the world - and minds of those who can remember it - to this day.

Chechnya has already been reabsorbed into the Russian sphere. Others are on the brink of take-over. The longer the West waits to respond and start building up it's military might again, the more likely the next rulers of the US and the UK will speak either Russian or Chinese.

And we do stupid things, just like the Russians, making probably the largest foreign policy blunder in the history of our collective countries by doing what Russia did, invading Iraq.

There is no moral high-ground here. Only brute force.

We still live in the jungle.

When did Russia invade Iraq? I thought that was Afghanistan.

Who asked you to butt in? We clarified this like the dignified, gentile, elder statesmen of the forum that we are. We need not some snotty little trampish chemist to tell us how to do things!

What is the world coming to, women's suffarage, women wearing pants instead of dresses, SHOWING THEIR ANKLES - it just shameful! Now they want to settler disputes. The last time the British did that some female took a ruler and drew borders in the former Ottoman Empire and set off one hell of a problem! We still haven't heard the last of that.
