Do you have some good Ways to save money?
« on: 12/10/2008 21:04:11 »
What with the credit crunch turning into the credit crisis and the banks going under it is hard to find new and interesting ways of saving money. Can anyone think of any? Also I'd like a collective noun for Bankers. My friend suggested a wunch.

(modified title to be in form of question.. Thanks)

Save on bank fees by handling your own money and closing your accounts! LOL!

Car pooling,

making shopping lists for 1 days worth of trips..

sending payments by mail not hand delivery!

Heavier curtains for winter or insulate your windows

find and stop drafts

wood heat.. (I wish I still had mine!)

By non named branded foods

clip coupons

bicycle

watch your old videos two or three times a month instead of renting new ones..

Don't go to a movie bring the theater to you.. pop some popcorn make refreshment healthy snacks

use your rainwater for watering plants and washing hair..

cut your own hair or let it grow for the winter then only cut it to donate for locks for love..(save having a stylist cut it regularly )

energy saving lights or use lamps and lamp oil when you can cut the dark electrical hours down.. its nice and also can be very intimate and cozy on stormy nights!

Add more blankets to the beds and keep heavier throws in your living room to combat the cold.. buy a cozy fleece wrap... ( I am going too!)

Clean your heater filters or vacuum dust out of furnaces to keep them efficient..

Vaccuum the back coils of refrigerator freezer units.. and clean drain plugs etc..

Preset your thermostats  to be conservative at night and be moderate during warmer hours!

use large area rugs on linolium or hardwood floors for the winter to keep your footsies warmer!

Defrost your meats the old fashioned way by taking it out and not using the microwave defrost cycle...

unplug appliances while not in use to conserve electricity in stand by mode!

wear warmer clothes

wear shoes and socks on cold days and evenings

Wear a knit cap or beanie to conserve body heat

limit your shower time

Buy in bulk if possible and freeze more things.... or split and share the bulk products, and the bill with a friend and save money on mutual products! Buy by the case..

Grow your own herbs etc.. or other goodies in the winter in pots inside if possible

Plan a party with a friend if you both want to have guests and slit the costs and the work! Nice way to meet new friends

Hug your family and tell them you love them... Just because it saves heartache!

I try to save money and it can be difficult when emergencies happen. Although I  try to cut back on foodie treats and
try not to go out for a meal more than I have too,

That's unless I'm visiting family then I take the bus although
my main method of getting around is on foot. Healthier and greener too.

I do grow my own herbs and I've frozen some for the wintertime.
As I do with leftovers of stews and I cook with fresh food as much as I can also I wear layers in the winter, that saves money and buy my clothes from charity shops sometimes.
Rosalind Franklin was my first cousin and one my life's main regrets is that I never met this brilliant and beautiful lady.

Hurry up and be 60 and get a bus pass.  [^]

Good point about growing herbs - they're a costly ingredient in supermarkets and are easy to grow; many (marjoram, parsley) can be dried for winter use if you get an excess

Blake I have a few years before I reach 60 to go and the herbs
that I have are a Bay leaf bush also a rosemary bush. lavender only that's not edible. I always get an excess of the herbs.

Also in the daytime I try not to turn on the lights to save the bulbs and money too. After all what can be greener than using
daylight.

I think Karen is winning the thrifty prize so far.

Dentstu, since when was showering with your partner interesting? Reading New Scientist is interesting. There are other adjectives that I would use in these circumstances!!
Give a man a fire and he is warm for a day, set a man on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life.

Dont buy newspapers, just work out how much you spend on them in a week!

Turn the central heating thermostat down by 2 degrees and also the water temperature.

Dont use paper kitchen towels.

Dont heat all the rooms in the house only the main one and use thermostatic radiator valves. Same with lighting, only have the room you are using at the time lit.

Restrict the use of the mobile phone and if you do use a normal phone then call after 6pm if possible.

Try to dry washing out of doors on the line when possible.

Haha Karen, I didn't even know microwaves had a defrost cycle!

@ Make it Lady.  I though the collective noun for bankers was wan....!

One that's occurred to me recently (and may not make much sense to the Americans on the board) is to use a stove-top kettle instead on electric one.  Heating is more efficient by gas than it is by electricity, and as it's unusual you're more likely to use the right amount of water.  And (unlike with an electric kettle) you can't forget about it and have to boil it again later on to make your tea.

Also, get a library card and instead of staying up in front of the TV, go to bed earlier and read!

No idea what the savings would be, but if you look after the pennies...

Whilst on the subject of electric hobs (which is what most seem to have in this part of Germany), they retain their heat enough that you can turn them off and carry on cooking (with Hattie Jacques). So for example, cooking noodles or boiling eggs, if you time it correctly, you only need to heat up the hob, put the saucepan on, and immediately turn off the hob.

Also, save water by not flushing every time (especially overnight). If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down.

You can also get "Hippos" that you put into the water tank of your toilet, so that less water goes in every re-fill. They're plastic boxes that just take up a bit of space. I believe that you can get them through your local water board. Alternatively, put a couple of bricks in the cistern instead - does the same job!

Go in the supermarket 3/4 of an hour before they close and buy cheap bread, veg, fruit, meat etc.

Bread and meat and most veg will freeze without blanching, The best fresh baked bread can be purchased less than 50% of normal cost. Even as cheep as 5p a loaf some times. If you are not short of cash though, please leave some for others as the stores have many savy visitors before closing time.

Now is the time to get that Lucien Freud you've always wanted - one went yesterday for a mere 5.4m - well under what was expected - but still a lot for one he hadn't even finished.
