Why Do We Squint When We Scrutinise ?
« on: 12/06/2009 00:50:40 »
Dear Scrutinologists,

As a sheepy I of course need to scrutinise every ewe in detail before blessing her with the gift of my preggy making joyness !

It dawned on me whilst interviewing my latest candidate that I wonder why we squint our eyes when scrutinising ?

Look, here is what I mean !

Eyes quite happily not scrutinising:

Eyes in deep scrutinisation !

I have been pondering this for many a long time now.....five whole minutes since I thought about it and I figured I know a place that might be able to help me !..................The all night kebab shop just said "Ewe want chilli sauce with that boss ? !!...so..no luck there !

Then i thought my superduper klevur chums whom I admire with affection and awe here will know !

so, why do we squint when scrutinising ?..or concentrating ?..or reading small print ? etc etc

Hugs et les shmishes

mwah mwah mwah !

neil
I also Squint When Doing a Poo !

So the question is " how does squinting your eyes help them focus "

When you squint your eyelids partially cover your pupils reducing their size.
This is analogous to reducing the aperture on a camera lens which increases the depth of focus and depth of field.

The same factors that determine depth of field also determine depth of focus...
Both depth of field and depth of focus increase with smaller apertures.

Thanks RD.

ooops..seems I missed that similar question. At least it was not one that I had already asked !

cooo !!...so being blissfully unaware of the biology behind the nature of squinting, we do it as a matter of instinct ?...isn't our inbuilt knowledge and bodies capabilities klevur ?

This now leads me to ask another question ! (link to follow in a few mins) http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=23592.new#new
