Can concrete damage cats?
« on: 27/01/2009 18:47:28 »
My cat is having great fun annoying the builders. She is particularly fond of walking through fresh cement. I came home tonight to hear Freddy shouting "Borte, be careful your bum crack doesn't seal up" I walked around to see Borte sat in the wet concrete. She then came in and started washing herself. She wouldn't let me sponge off the worst bits. So the question is will Borte come to any harm from ingesting concrete?

Wet cement is alkaline (caustic): Borte may have used up one of her nine lives.

Quote
The hazards of wet cement are due to its caustic, abrasive, and drying properties.

Wet concrete contacting the skin for a short period and then thoroughly washed off causes little irritation. But continuous contact between skin and wet concrete allows alkaline compounds to penetrate and burn the skin.

When wet concrete or mortar is trapped against the skin—for instance, by falling inside a worker’s boots or gloves or by soaking through protective clothing—the result may be first, second, or third degree burns or skin ulcers. These injuries can take several months to heal and may involve hospitalization and skin grafts

I'll try and find a bank that will give me a second morgage for the vets bills. I may be gone for some time.

Make sure Borte has free access to plenty of water (or cat-milk) to drink.

Alkali could cause chemical burns in mouth or throat, (but stomach acid would neutralise an alkali),

She has just eaten her food, the other cats food, some crunches and some water. I don't think she is going to die, well maybe of cat obesity.

Roberts right.. cement is really not good stuff..It carries labeled warning of cancer on it.. and not to get it on skin..known to the state of California to cause cancer...some such warning.....you should always avoid contact with wet cement when possible.....I believe this is true of someone working with it on a regular basis with lots of exposure..

Injesting it seems really not good for Your little cat friend!

I hope the cement doesn't render Borte into a state of catatonia.

I'm not going to mention sending him for a cat-scan - too obvious.

Anyway, perhaps he'd be too scared. He may be too pusillanimous.
