The natural barrier of the mountains means that the river is hundreds of meters above sea level as it leaves the Congo basin. This would have protected it against natural disasters that create mega-tsunamis, unlike the Amazon basin. The deep estuary landscape would be the place of evoltion of our ancestors, with the Congo basin refuge playing a part in the ebb and flow of the populations. Did early man then venture back into the Congo and travel east to the Great Rift Valley? i.e. Trees -> estuary -> plains. Congo Estuary
