It's hard comparing the Permian extinction to today. They had different causes and paleologist's of different types put different weights to different possibilities. This one from the National Geographic may give you an idea of the variety of options there.

So yes, the causes may differ, volcanoes versus fossil fuels, but the end result is the same. A concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere, staying there for centuries after we stopped using fossil fuels.

Another thing differing the Permian extinction from now is that we can presume that 'intelligence' wasn't there. Neither was the greed and core beliefs connected to our actions today. We exploit and we mass produce, and it's fast. How long do you think plastics has existed?

so you put the pieces together, add in stuff like deserts growing, topsoil disappearing, scarcity of drink and usable water for irrigation. Floods instead of rain, and droughts meaning that instead of the rain sinking down into the ground it just grab that topsoil and wash it away. You have a mind.

If we take topsoil. it may take anything from five hundred years to a thousand to naturally (by nature) create a inch wide layer of topsoil. And to make it fertile needs another millennium or so to acquire the minerals. And of course, you still need those worms existing.
