Which viruses can cause "viral arthritis"?

Dirk.Slawinski asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi Chris,

I found out yesterday that I more than likely have "viral induced arthritis" the most likely culprit is Ross River fever. I have not had the full flu symptoms but I have had the joint pain, which have ebbed since they hit a few days ago.

I'm hoping this is just a "mild" variety.  My GP is treating the pain with prescription anti-inflammatories, but has suggested to only have a blood test if the pain/symptoms continue for more than 2 weeks.

I would think that one would want to be sure that it is/is not Ross River regardless especially since I would have contracted it from a backyard mosquito as we have not travelled out of town.

Why do you think this would be the case?  Are there viruses that can cause the same thing but are not "as bad" and so do not need to be typed?

Dirk Slawinski

What do you think?

Hello Guys,

I think that Parvovirus B19 is responsible for "viral arthritis".
