I was going to post this before the event, but lost my broadband connection yesterday.

Yesterday BBC 4 ran a series of programmes on Mars and the 'Orion' project.

The 'Horizon' programme can be found on the BBC iplayer here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00p1crx/Mars_A_Horizon_Guide/
And Sir Patrick Moore's 'Sky at Night' Mars special is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00p1crx/Mars_A_Horizon_Guide/
The 'Mars by A bomb' programme on the Orion project, sadly is not on the iplayer.

I watched parts of it as I had previously seen it.

Quite apart from anything else, I am astounded at good ol' Sir Patrick. He must be nearly as old as the universe himself...... (No offence intended) and still he keeps going!

Re the Orion project: this article mentions one of the less obvious problems with the idea.  It also contains a link to the 'memoir' in question (10MB PDF)

...And its claws are as big as cups, and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps! And Mrs Doyle was telling me it's got magnets on its tail, so if you're made out of metal it can attach itself to you! And instead of a mouth it's got four arses!
