Does hair grow back thicker/more if you cut it?

Does hair grow back thicker/more if you cut it?

I don't believe it's true. How does the skin detect that the hair has been cut? Will hair not grow past a certain length if it is never cut? Is it the same for pubic hair/facial hair/body hair?

So the short answer is no.

But people swear that it does.. and it does *look* like it's thicker (and darker), however the end of the hair that has been cut is blunt, which changes the way light looks on the hair shaft... while a natural tapered end makes it seem 'thinner' and lighter.

JnA is correct hair is tapered and is thicker near to the root and gets thinner nearer the tip.  Although cutting your hair short won't make your hair grow again, if your hair is long or you use tongs or blow dry your hair, the pressure on the root is increased and that could increase the hair loss.
