What causes wrinkles and skin ageing?

What causes skin to wrinkle with age? At a structural level, why does this happen? What can be done to reverse this process?

I always thought it was from dryness lack of moisture in the skin years of exposure.. dry cracking parched looking skin... like the mud flats when they dry out...and age ..but the wrinkles get deeper and I believe it has to do with the elastin which is in our skin and vessels and other places it is this elastic substance that enables our skin to be resilient and bounce back when poked or pressed.. I believe it is a protein or series of proteins strung together...connective tissues as I recall.. I just cannot remember why we loose this as we age.. and or if we can do anything to replace it except through nutrition healthy living etc etc.. supplements.. I look forward to seeing if This lack of elastin has any hand in the problem?

Just for Chris...  [;)]

He he

It is all in the  telomeres....  [:)]

I suspect Chris already knows the answer to this question, so I will give a brief answer.

Skin aging is multi-factor-

*Skin cell production slows down as we age, less differentiation of cells leaves skin looking much thinner than usual. Thinning of the epidermis means less moisture is held in, and therefore skin dries out.

*The dermal layer also thins, collagen production decreases and the elastin fibres degrade without repair, leaving causing the skin to wrinkle and sag, visibly on the epidermis.

^The junctions between dermal/epidermal layers degrade, leading to a loss of nutrients supplied to the epidermis. This in turn effects skin cell health and viability.
