Do animals look different to each other?
« on: 10/10/2005 05:00:23 »
Dearest Wonder Naked Scientists Peeps,

Do you think that each individual animal in each animal species looks different to them as we do to ourselves ?...?...and if not ....why not ?......cos I'll be blowed if I can tell one penguin from another

...and that's what I want to know.....

Looks wise they all probably look the same to each other,I think the animal kingdom relies more on sound and smell.
Maybe sight recognition is mainly a human thing.

However not all penguins look the same, if you take a trip down to your local asda's you can buy a multipack which contain red, blue, green, and yellow varieties. [:)]

What’s happened to my humor, its defiantly taken a nose dive recently.

Neil,
experiments have been done on whether sheep respond to pictures of other sheep's faces.  One example I've found is on this link:

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6320

It doesn't say that sheep can necessarily recognise other individual sheep just from their faces, but it does show that they can tell just from a picture of a sheep's face whether that sheep is the same breed as them or not.

It would be interesting to repeat the experiment using pictures of sheep's bodies rather than faces - to see if they can tell the difference between a cloud (with legs drawn on it) and a sheep. Cos I can't.[:D]

Solvay.

Thanks Solvay,

That's a great link.

I do wonder why we are the only ones with unique faces that are obvious in their differences. I mean, sight is pretty much up there as my most important sense.

When you look up in the sky do you see sheep  ?  [:D][:D]...and I can imagine you being well confused when you see a field full of happy sheep on a cloudy day !![;)]

And Michael !.....ha ha ha....that made me laugh that did !

I guess wit depends whether it is a species that is dominated by sight or by other senses. I would guess that birds (especially social ones) can tell each other apart by sight - be it facial or whole bodies, but dogs would rely more on smell...

Wait, not even fellow primates can distinguish each others' face?

It would seem that monkeys can: http://visagetechnologies.com/facereccog/

Interestingly enough, so can some wasps: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/11/111202-wasps-people-faces-recognition-insects-science-animals/

Like I said, you can't challenge me on time because I am the ''master'' on time and space and if Einstein was here today he would concede to me.
