you can tell if cooking oil is hot enough by sticking the handle of a wooden spoon in it. If the oil bubbles around the handle, the oil is quite hot.

(This may actually be well known, but I only found out about it recently.)

....Michael Caine did not actually say "Not a lot of people know that." I'm not sure I believe this exactly, but allegedly, it was Peter Sellers doing a spoof on Michael Caine that started it.

Perhaps some scientist with too much time on their hands can explain why - I mean about the bubbles - not the spouse thing.

If you bought the rice on the Internet, would they be E-spoused?

Peter Sellers as the source as explained by Michael Caine:

I think Caine is "winding us up".

I'm willing to wager a large sum, as much $5, that Caine (as Harry Palmer was it?) said "Not a lot of people know that."

"Scotia" originally was the term the Romans used for Ireland (Land of the Gaels) but eventually was used to refer to those north of the River Forth, then to all of what is now Scotland.

But what is the difference, anyway? Both are sort of weird.

That Texas was much larger than it now is, extending north into what is now Wyoming? It was bigger than the fabled super-Idaho, about which I can find no information.

In 1945, a computer at Harvard malfunctioned and Grace Hopper, who was working on the computer, investigated and found a moth in one of the circuits and removed it. Ever since, when something goes wrong with a computer, it is said to have a bug in it.

Re-posted from above Geezer's last to correct the math. I made the original Texas smaller than it actually was.

Idaho - 83,642 sq. mi.
Montana - 147,165 sq. mi.
Wyoming - 97,818 sq. mi.

= a total of 253,347 sq. mi. COUNTING the area that once was part of Texas

Texas when it, as an INDEPENDENT NATION, voluntarily joined the United States, consisted of all of present day Texas, parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, about 1/3rd of Colorado and over 1/2 of New Mexico, that part east of the Rio Grande River, a little less than twice it's present area. A total of

Present day Texas = 268,820 sq. mi.

Plus

1/2 New Mexico = ~60,833 Sq. Mi.
1/3 Colorado =  ~52,093  Sq. Mi.
parts of Kansas, Oklahome, and Wyoming = about another 50,000 square miles

= 431,746 square miles

I think that the fabled El Idahoe-dorado was way smaller than the original Texas - including that the part that is now part of Wyoming and could not have been part of the fabled El Idahoe-dorado - was much smaller than Texas when it became part of the Union and smaller than Texas as it is now.

Sorry, sheep-gut-eater.

AND

... that Scotland has only a small measure of self-rule compared to other parts of the British Commonwealth.

Very interesting, Ethos

I am already yawning in anticipation. Let me know 15 minutes before you post so I can brew some extra strong coffee.

BTW, for some reason the Scots are actually over represented (I have a theory about why that is which would probably get me banned. Let's just say it's to do with something with which you are rather familiar [;D])

Anyway, it seems the Scots get to elect members of the UK Parliament (which, by accident, happens to be in London and therefore causes Americans to assume Scotland is ruled by England, which it ain't) and now they also get to elect members of the Scottish Parliament which seems to be about as much use as a chocolate teapot - IMHO.  Though I suppose, if you only ever drank iced tea, a chocolate teapot would not really be all that bad. Where the hell was I?

The Naked Scientists have shown a chocolate teapot has greater structural integrity than the Scottish parliament building.
