Will there ever be a cure for aging?

John Bermingham  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi,

There's a lot of talk these days regarding an eventual solution to human ageing.

Scientists such as Aubrey De Grey and futurist Ray Kurzweil claim that within 25-30 years there may be medical treatments available that will effectively reverse ageing.

I know this is not your field of expertise, but still I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on this, whether you think there will ever be a cure for ageing, and what you make of their predicted time-scales?

BTW,

love the show,

Cheers,

John, Dublin
What do you think?

I think it's highly probable that it will become possible.

The problem, however, will be who is allowed to use it?  Politicians will argue that it would be immoral to allow its general use, but also argue that they, and their chosen 'supporters' are so essential to running the world (and maintaining current levels of mismanagement and unnecessary chaos) that they'll be exempt.
...And its claws are as big as cups, and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps! And Mrs Doyle was telling me it's got magnets on its tail, so if you're made out of metal it can attach itself to you! And instead of a mouth it's got four arses!

I think you may have hit a nerve at Westminster there Lee, well, quite a few of them actually.

If you'll pardon the expression, God forbid this should ever happen. An eternity of Brown, Blair, Cameron, Bush and the like, just doesn't bare contemplating. And the bankers will be happy to arrange 900 year mortgages on 10m 2 up 2 down properties, which will end up costing 10 billion.

"And now on ITV56, 789 year old Simon Cowel hosts X25 Factor".

AGHHHHHH, Will someone please invent a suicide pill!
If brains were made of dynamite, I wouldn't have enough to blow my nose.
