I know what ewe mean though Joe....I do actually sign most of my questions with my real name (neil)...but thinking up a handle for oneself is part of the signing up process if I recall.........and..........for so long now......most of us have been  "conditioned " to create a persona for so many things be it on the web or part of a club.......... and for some...privacy is essential.

Well I use my own name, at least to a point. I do not wish to get spammed so avoid giving too much personal info away. It does not matter too much on this site, but on another forum (a political forum) I keep my name completely hidden because I do not want people to associate my personal views with those of my company. I have to watch my Ps and Qs or shareholders can get upset.

One consideration on any public forum or newsgroup is that your musings can get archived essentially forever (through the likes of Google). If someone (like a prospective employer) puts your name into Google (especially if you have a rarer, more unique name), do you really want all your idle thoughts or speculations you posted at 3am -or even the fact that you posted at 3am- to pop up?
It's not that you'd necessarily have anything to hide, but we all say things which might look foolish with hindsight, especially if taken out of context.

Probably a bigger issue with political sites/comments than science, but even here on TNS, topics can veer towards the more controversial (nuclear/wind power, population control, GM foods, thoughts on the pharma industry...) or embarrassing (eg medical-related)!

Lots of comments I wrote on usenet newsgroups 16 years ago as an undergraduate at university will still pop up if you search for my real full name. Not a big problem, but it can get a little bit freaky!

Actually I have noticed that more people use their name (or at least a name) over a 'handle' on this forum, compared to others.

Real names are boring. It's just internet culture to try and think of something cool for a username instead of just your boring old name.

I use my own name as I don't care what my ex employers thought of me, or anyone else thought of me, as I have nothing to hide.. I tried another name on one time.Disaster! I signed into another forum recently that kinda asked that we did not use our own names.. I am not sure how I like that yet? Doesn't feel right..
I like my own name just fine.. and prefer it so what you see is what you get!

Using your own name ( or some variable part therof) makes it more consistent across forums, where you meet the same people with similar interests.

It's always safer to maintain a bit on online anonimity. There are some incredibly devious people snooping around on the web.

For example, suppose you happen to mention on TNS that you'll be "off the air" for a couple of weeks. Some people might take that as an open invitation to steal your stuff while you are out of town.

Not giving a real name enables a greater degree of deindividuation, as well as the medium of the internet forum anyway People on forums can behave in a way they would not dream of behaving in real life, because they are a username sat behind a screen.

Joe, to each one what they like. To inform of your name marks you as a serious guy :)
But what counts in the long run is the way you behave, not what name you leave.

Typically people don't get to choose their "real" name, unfortunately, just ask Miss Metallica Tomato...
