Can a slate roof block mobile signal?
« on: 06/03/2010 04:30:03 »
Natasja Atherton  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hope you can help! We have very bad cellphone reception in our house, in the garden the reception is fine. None of our neighbours have the problem.

Is it possible that our slate roof could block or interfere with our reception?
Thank you

What do you think?

Most building materials will attenuate a mobile radio signal though generally don't block it. Also most of the received signal will be from close to line of sight to the cell base station (or via relections of other buildings and objects) so the roof may not be the cause unless you are in the attic. It may be that you are in a weak reception area and the thickness and number of walls between you and the base station is just too much. In a weak signal area and in a building could mean that you are getting multiple signals due to lots of reflections. These interfere so that small movements of the phone can change the received signal strength quite a lot giving erratic reception.
