As a firm believer in empirical study I will do my best to impregnante as many ladies as poss to answer this question...all in the name of science of course !!...but I remember when wifey was preggy...she did go through phases of bizarre taste rquirements........ pizzas with pickle on them, jam and marmite sarnies......fortunately these genuine ' haute cuisine' adventures were short lived.

I know we have mentioned this before, also (and i remember seeing a documentary about this) about how preggy girlies would seek out chalk and pica too...

I'm sure it's all related to the fact that girlies once a month go insane, and that everybody is guilty !!..it must be related eh ?...

Lets hope a passing ' weird cravings during preggy' expert answers.

Having never lived with a pregnant woman, I have no direct experience. However, a friend of mine told me recently that when she was pregnant she often craved pilchards with mustard [xx(]

I always assumed that it was something to do with the mother instinctively (subconsciously) knowing what nutrients she was lacking in her diet (to meet the specific needs of the growing foetus).

But then I found my wife (during at least a couple of her pregnancies) getting addicted to SMELLS too - specifically, to that fusty smell you get when you open the cupboard under the sink. Weird!

So maybe you're right. They do just go bonkers (due to the hormones).

Solvay - I've heard that too, but it doesn't hold water. How does an ordinary female know what nutrients are in what food? I doubt many people actually know

Does pregnancy addle the brain as well as the body?

Since pretty much all hormones, whether adrenalin, testosterone, oestrogen, etc. all mess around with the brain, I have no doubt that pregnancy would do so.

What I have always wondered is whether the cravings are random, or follow a pattern?  Do they reflect any difference in the needs the body has for various minerals etc. during pregnancy?
