Could you use magnets to propel a motor

Errol T Van Renen  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris

Much appreciate your input into our world of ignorance.

I have a question that I may have the answer to, in other words if it has not been done yet its not possible.

Is there any possibility of costructing an (always on) motor using magnets to propel the rotor?

Thanx

Errol

What do you think?

It is not possible to obtain a continuous supply of power from permanent magnets, magnets do indeed store power in a similar way to batteries do but it is not easy to extract it and when its gone its gone

Conservation of energy, perpetual motion, alchemist wizardry transforming lead into gold cheaply these all are ideal ideas that haunted man since man became self aware or later!
