Are green potatoes poisonous?

Ryan asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi from Cape Town, the host for your lot v Algeria in the World Cup!

Please would you let me know whether potatoes that have gone slightly green as they age are actually dangerous for humans ... as in possibly poisonous; or perhaps just not ideal for your digestion.

Thanks a lot

Potatoes are members of the nightshade family. The potato is actually an enlargement of the stem. It can contain visible amounts of chlorophyll and appear green. When it does, the potato can have amounts of a poison called solanine that might make you ill IF you ate a large quantity, say 2 kilos or more.

You don't need that much green potato to make you ill.
