Cat eats bird, dog eats cat... or not?
« on: 18/07/2010 04:07:31 »
I have 2 dogs, a cat, a budgie and a tarantula.(i already know i'm mad)

anyway, i thaught cats killed birds and dogs wanted to kill cats. but in my house the dogs sleep with cat, and the cat ignores the bird and is always after the tarantula.
is that weird or am i just being too steriotypical?

I think you are being too influenced by WB cartoons :)

Dogs will chase small animals that are running away from it... rabbits, cats, rodents etc etc..  they'll do it out of hunger or play...   it's small, it looks tasty.. wonder if I can catch it...

Cats are hunters through and through. They will hunt, but again it's small it's tasty.. I think I can get that.

the type of 'prey' is not important.

Digs and cats are generally pack animals, but they aren't too fussy about the pack members. Domestic dogs and cats will accept you as part of their pack as well as other animals they see you treating nicely. So the cat and bird might be considered 'part of the pack' now. I have no idea on tarantula psychology but it must look like more fun for the cat than the bird does.

I have just been recalling some of my pet combinations and was reminded of the time when I had a cat and goldfish. Both lived happily in harmony (basically ignoring each other for years) until one day I can home, found the bowl empty of fish and the cat with a wet paw (up to the elbow).

So the stereotypes of what chases what are true to a certain extent then.
