Can volcanic glass start a fire?
« on: 06/08/2010 14:30:02 »
Mearns Learner 1  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi there, might it be possible to start a fire using strands of Pele's hair - a geological term for volcanic glass? I believe it is possible to focus the suns rays using an ordinary piece of glass.

Pele's Hair is often found in an uncoloured state - clear.

Many Thanks
Bert

Yes, it is possible, just as if you were using a magnifying glass.

I would add, that you are more likely to get a sort of lens from Pele's tears rather than Pele's hair...
