Jared Harding asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

A question that has made me wonder for a few years; why is it we always look for water when searching for life in other parts of the universe?

Surely this is narrow-minded of us to not consider there may be alternative forms of life that differ in their functions such that water is not a necessity as it is for us, and instead they are dependent on some other basic substances? Once more your viewpoint would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Jared Harding.

What do you think?

There is the problem for you water is important for all the life we know about. Apparently Silcon could potencially form life, instead of carbon. But it probably would use water too, to wash and stuff(that's a joke, actually if didnt wash would you want to find it?).
What am I doing thinking about science?

The good news is that you, at least, are not alone...
