Emilio Romero J asked the Naked Scientists:
Dear Dr Chris

I've heard and read many times that after intense physical exercise there is a period in which the body keeps burning calories at a very high rate even though physical demand has stopped completely; people call this the "afterburner effect" (for the afterburners in jet fighters).

Lately, however, I've read from good authority that it is a myth, that such effect does not exist.

Please, could your higher and definitive authority settle the matter?

Thank you so much

Emilio Romero
