Why Does An Earthquake Shorten The Day ?

Dearest Peeps who Know Ever Such A Lot !.....Ewe're simply fantastic ewe lot are !!

I was watching a prog about the recent Earthquake in Japan and apparently, because of it....our day is ever so slightly shorter than it was before the quake !

Why's that then ?...Why/How does an earthquake shorten my day ?

Please to be letting me know when ewe can !

In theory, it happens for the same reason that a spinning skater rotates faster as they pull their arms in.

If some of the Earth's mass moves towards the centre of the Earth, the Earth will have to spin a bit faster. It's because the kinetic energy stored in the rotating Earth is essentially constant, and because the total mass didn't change but it moved closer to the Earth's axis, and the energy cannot suddenly change, the speed has to change.
There ain'ta no sanity clause, and there ain'ta no centrifugal force Šther.

The earth will also slow don when a volcano erupts more material to the earths surface. Erosion also make land masses. Even Greenl;and is slowing down the earth as the ice melts.
