The ancient names of the vertebrae of the human spine

Before the vertebrae of the spine got their scientific position-names (C1-c7 and Th 1-12 and so on)they must have had more descriptive names because some of the vertebrae still have their own names. E.g atlas, axis and vertebra prominens. Do anyone know something about this topic?
