Fly spray contains a powerful contact insecticide such as Dichlorvos. This works on the insect's nervous system. The insect will be unable to fly and will die from asphyxiation.

I should add that this insecticide poses risks to all insects, including those which are beneficial, such as bees. It is also harmful to fish, our pets and us. It should only be used as a last resort and with great care.

In the UK/EU it probably isn't dichlorvos.

But the idea is right. Probably a pyrethroid rather than an organophosphate.

There is a much better method.

I find it quite satisfying hunting them down with a fly swat, after 5 mins your room is clear of them and does not stink of toxic chemicals either.
