Ah! Now, well, you see....... erm....... yes, I'm glad you asked me that kweschun. No, no I'm not. In fact I don't know why you have asked such a faecesous kweschun. Why is poo brown??? Let's face it, if your poo did come out in all the colours of the rainbow, you'd be off to the doc a bit rapid."Doctor, doctor, help me!"
The bottom line (sorry!) is that there is a chemical produced in the colon called stercobilin which is made from the bilirubin produced when haemoglobin from red blood cells is broken down. Bilirubin is a yellow colour, stercobilin is brown. Poos can also be artificially darkened by the presence of blood, if a person has bleeding from higher up in the GI tract. Here's the link to a answer I gave to this question on the radio a few years back:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/content/latest-questions/question/2352/Chris
You can also change the color of your waste with diet.Eat lots of milk and cheese for a day, and it will turn whiter in color.A pound or two of black jelly beans, and it will turn blackish in color. And, a few fresh beats, and you can turn it blood red.
I'm just going to say that the blue colour of this stuffhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cura%C3%A7ao_(liqueur)does not cross the wall of the GI tract.
