What is a grow lamp?
« on: 17/02/2013 01:49:29 »
The other day when I was shopping, I decided to get a couple of grow lamps.

They come in both incandescent, and fluorescent, and cost several times as much as an "ordinary" bulb.

The only thing that I can see is a blue paint.  Plants don't effectively absorb green, so perhaps that is related.  They also grow slower with UV, so are the lamps UV shielded?

Anything else?

Or...  are they just a fancy bulb that manufacturers can charge exorbitant prices for.

Sometimes a house burns down because it has been filled with high-intensity lamps for growing marijuana in hydroponics.

The electrical fires are often due to trying to bypass the electricity meter for the very high currents drawn by these lamps.

Ahh....  yeah...
I am good at growing weeds.
But, I don't need to grow weed.
If I wanted to do that, I could simply move 100 miles North to the other side of the "river".

I found a Wikipedia page on Grow Lamps.  However, it doesn't really show a good comparison for effectiveness of the different grow lamps.

My goal was actually to get a little heat for starting seeds and plants, so I've chosen the incandescent bulbs for the time being.  Heat + a little light.

Apparently the spectrum output from the lamp can encourage/discourage the plant to flower.
