Could spent nuclear fuel be dumped into the Sun?
« on: 27/07/2013 21:30:01 »
John Sumabat  asked the Naked Scientists:
If it were technically and financially possible to dispose of spent nuclear fuel on to the Sun, what would happen?

I've been a great fan of your programme ever since I suffered an ischemic stroke back in march of 2011 while I was at the office; I was fortunate that a colleague found me and was able to summon the aid of first responders to take me to the hospital where I was given TPA [tissue plasminogen activator] to break up the clot.

However, I was left with a left side deficiency. I am planning on participating in a trial in the use of stem cells for stroke recovery, because I'm just too impatient to wait for my brain to heal on its own

Kind regards
What do you think?

It would take a very large multi stage rocket system to get out of the Earths orbit and drop down into the Sun and considering the crash resistant packaging that would be demanded the cost per kilo would be astronomical.
There are many better ways of safely storing or disposing of nuclear waste but the political problems are horrendous.

I am pleased that you were able to get prompt and appropriate treatment for your stroke and the best of luck with your experimental treatment

PS no amount of waste that we could dump into the Sun would have any effect on it !

It'd be so much better and easier to bury it miles down in the earth. It's sort of like putting it back from where we got it in the first place. :)
