What field of Geology should i go into?
« on: 25/12/2013 01:31:56 »
Sorry I'm new here so I don't know if I put this in the right place. I'm interested in becoming a geologist but I don't know which field to join specifically. I'm still in college here in quebec but I'm interested in travelling and I've always loved palaeontology and working in labs. I would really appreciate any suggestions and any stories about how you joined your particular field and the day to day life of a geologist. thanks!

Hi Bearthecold, Welcome to TNS.

I am not a geologist, but rather wish I had had the opportunity to be.  My interest in geology started in my very late twenties, over 40 years ago, and has been very limited in terms of the amount of time I have been able to devote to it as a hobby.

I believe it would be very difficult to offer anyone else advise as to what field of geology he/she should specialise in, it is such an individual thing.  As a Cornishman, my real love is hard-rock geology, but the “gardening” that passes for geology here in East Anglia has its attractions.

I think, what I am saying is that if you have an underpinning interest in Earth science, your best course of action is to seek the best broad education/qualification you can and follow your own interest – as it develops – into a specialisation that will suite you.

Whatever you opt for, I wish you all the best, and hope you continue posting in TNS to breathe some more life into the geology threads.

One of my sons enjoyed geology at school and pursued it through mining engineering. Now more occupied with the underground mechanical engineering aspects of the business but works with lab-based geologists and lots of travel!
