Daniel Melnechuk asked the Naked Scientists:
I recently learned from a Nurse Practitioner that the color of phlegm being green versus white has nothing to do with a cold or flu hosting a bacterial component.

The green color comes from dead red blood cells. This was confirmed by a doctor. But the false correlation continues to be evidenced even at my next visit to the doctors when the assistant who took my blood pressure repeated it.

As for snot, I have not heard direct info one way or the other.

Thanks for a great podcast. My wife and I listen to every episode of you and Dr Carl.
