Melanocytes in the skin produce melanin to protect the skin against Ultra violet radiation. People in hotter climates that get more sunshine such as in africa produce more melanin.

But nature made a mistake. The color black attracts more heat and gets hotter. But white reflects more heat and stays cooler.

It makes more sense that the hotter southern climates should have more white people. And the cooler northern climates should have more blacks because black attracts heat. But the reverse is true, blacks are south and white are north.

Nature screwed up on skin color.
