What happens to carbonic acid when a can or bottle is opened?
What is the equation for the reversible reaction?

[tex]CO_2 + H_2O {\rightharpoon\atop\leftharpoondown} H_2CO_3 {\rightharpoon\atop\leftharpoondown} 2H^+ + CO_3^{2-}[/tex]

So, under pressure, more carbon dioxide combines with water to form carbonic acid.
When the pressure is released, then it reverses making free carbon dioxide (the bubbles) and water (thus flat soda).
