GTF-Turbine PW1000G exploded
« on: 01/06/2014 13:11:14 »
According to news items from welt.de from the 01/06/14, has a GTF PW1000G turbine exploded on the 29th of May 2014. Apparently during the explosion the safety cover had been breached, and damage to the airplane was caused requiring fire-brigade attention.

One hears from experts that the failure can not be contributed to a design fault by Pratt & Whitney, which have researched that type of turbine for many years, but may be do to a material, manufacturing or assembly fault.

I have for many years researched EV clutches which use an EV fluid with a negative temperature co-efficient.
So as the aircraft turbine gets hot, the EV fluid gearbox is being cooled by design and remains at app. 85 deg. C.

Here is a link to the mechanical gearbox used in the PW1000G.
