What do you think of my physics magic tricks?

Physics Magic

It may be obvious to tell by my screen name that I am BOTH a scientist and a sorcerer ([;D]or at least I like to think I am) I merely mean to say that am interested in both subjects, sometimes those interests overlap.

I am a magician but I hate the Idea of doing cheap unimpressive tricks I would like to make my tricks real and powerful. I have come up with a way to make my tricks "better" using science.  I want to know if you would be impressed by some of these "science infused magic tricks"

The First few tricks are done by using "A high degree of electric fields".

Making Tero cards look real
First get a deck of cards (small lite cards are best) then spray the cards in a transparent conductive coating so that the surface of the cards are conductive.  Then Use a 100-200KV voltage multiplier, static electricity generator to charge your body to van de graff levels (being shore not to be grounded or even close to grounded when doing this)

By waving your hands over the conductive cards you can move them around via static attraction. you might even be able to levitate the cards to your hands if you had enough power.

Imagine if a fortune teller said he could tell your future then levitated a tarot card into his hands [:o].   You might be more inclined to believe the so called fortune teller if he could "prove that he was magic" [;)] especially if you didn't know he was using static.

This is not a theory. This trick can be done with enough static. I have personally done it before with my van de graff But I have never done it in public as a street magic trick Because I don't own a voltage multiplier over 50kv which is not quite enough to levitate the cards. barely

-Bending water with your hands becomes too easy with 100Kv of electric field, your better off using 20kv. Just another trick.

-levitate Mylar orbs, feathers and sculptures. imagine making a butterfly out of Mylar and watching it fly out of your hands and levitate. To keep your sculpture floating you'll need to rapidly move your hands under it, repelling it with your strong electric field. again I have done this with my 50kv ionizer shoe.

-roll a crystal ball or aluminum cans and stuff around on a table "with static" by doing this you appear to be moving the objects with your mind.

-shoot lightning out of your hands. This one is obvious, you can shoot 3 inch lightning bolts at anything or anyone you feel like. The bolts will be extremely painful for both you and your target. with a 100kv generator
you can destroy any electronic device without even one touch and shock the hell out of anybody you want. I personally have gotten used to 50kv  shocks but 100kv is painful no matter how used to it you are.

On the bight side mosquitos physically can't land on you long enough to bite you because ones they land on you they get repelled off of you.  nobody could steal from you either. If they tried you would hear a AAAOW! and feel a shock. Their attempt failed and a thief stopped dead in the act.

-Light stuff on fire. If you shock something flammable such as some gasoline it will combust and catch fire. Soak a few yarn balls in lighter fluid then blast them with a little lightning, shut off the device and juggle the fire balls. [8D]

-make sand dance. Any small particles such as sugar salt or sand will bounce up and down in a wind storm under your hands as they become attracted and repelled rapidly.

-Styrofoam stones you can levitate Styrofoam and move it around as easily as Mylar you can paint the Styrofoam to look like rocks or whatever and levitate them or move them around at will. I made a small Styrofoam ball levitate which had a coating of uv glow paint on it, it was awesome and so easy to make.

-light a neon tube with your mind!  take a neon tube and hold it in your hand and ground it to something. Next turn on your device and watch the bulb glow. If you turn on your device before grounding the bulb (and yourself) you will receive a shock and the bulb will glow for a split moment very brightly.

I personally used a type of paint called "electroluminescent paint" It was pinkish clear and glowed white, I painted my hands with geometric tattoos and symbols. It blended in with my skin and looked invisible(ish). I made it glow when I grounded myself by shocking someone or just touching the ground and my tattoos glowed (my personal greatest achievement) Ha Ha Ha. But I wish I could REALLY tattoo myself like that, my glowing tattoos were temporary.  [:-\]

I wanted to cover my head, hair and hands with the stuff to appear as an angel of light but elelectro luminescent paint is very expensive and I was never able to do it.

that's enough about static (gotta keep some of my better tricks secret)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some lesser tricks that Ive come up with which i'll tell

I have a very large book containing my tricks, A "spell book" without a name. I use it from time to time, writing new spells when I feel like it.

It's unlike any other book in the world as far as I know, even though it's not even half way done, it is powerful enough to be a lethal weapon.

along it's spine it contains 12 AA lithium rechargeable batteries with 2 stacks of 6 in parallel and a 555 oscillator chip. The batteries connect directly to a DC book mark with the electrodes on the book mark's back side made of conductive ink, from there you can power any DC circuit written on the pages in conductive ink. The 555 timer has a button switch at the bottom of the book's spine which activates a second book mark attached to the 555, it sends out a low amp 500hz, 100volt AC current.

My book is mostly encoded in Enochian but English is often used. I use the book in combination with AC and DC to draw whatever I want on the pages and watch the pictures come to life. I can make pictures and text glow and be animated by using electroluminescent ink.

the book is mostly just drawings with simple electroluminescent ink circuits but the book has other very interesting effects aside from that. The book is a radio with the ability to pickup radio-waves via a small chip, a quarts crystal sheet, a variable capacitor made from aluminum foil and several pancake coils and pancake antenna. It sends the resulting audio information to a coil of wire made of copper tape. If you place a small neodymium magnet above it you can hear the radio through the book.

The book is made with a variety of paint and is not always electrical, it has electro-luminesent ink, photo-chromic ink, thermo-chromic ink, a little hydrochromic ink, conductive ink, conductive tape, invisible UV ink, invisible IR ink, dielectric ink, invisible conductive ink, a little magnetic ink, photo-glow ink, various sharpie inks, graphite and whatever I could find. It contains a whole bunch of Ideas too.  It's my most prized possession.

It has 2 flat circular neodymium magnets on the front and back which keep the book closed. there is a small capacitor made from aluminum foil sheets and paper, it is a line of conductive ink going around the outside rim of the cover, if you try to open the book without discharging the capacitor you will be shocked.  The shock is only as powerful as a static jolt, it's just so I know who's been messing with it and to keep people from messing with it.

I one time scared the sh!t out of this one woman by pulling that big book out and reading enochian out loud! When I explained to her that the pictures only glowed because of electricity she wouldn't hear it, she just kept calling me "the devil" and that I was "evil" It didn't help that I drew a picture of a pentagram on one of the pages which glows red.  The shocks the book was able to deliver really made her loose it  [:P]  sense then my dad told me to get rid of the dang thing but I never will.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A long time ago about 2 years ago I was experimenting with heavy gasses from computer dusters then with sulfur hexafloride. I blew peoples minds by getting a small pressurized container of s6fl and getting a gas line and putting it over the nasal, then I pushed the line all the way up to my wrist and activated the pressurized container in my pocket, It was trashy but it worked, I would breath the gas covertly before talking to a cashier or whatever their confused faces always made me laugh, the gas made my laugh sound sooo deep it sounded evil. I only did it a few times a long time ago but I remember it like it was yesterday. good times [;)]

I remember one time I used the gas to levitate a Styrophone S in a bowl which got reactions from everybody. It was such a simple trick but everybody was overly amazed that they all pulled out their phones to take pictures of it and stuff.

I have done various types of levitation before too. I did static levitation, magnetic levitation and quantum levitation but I have never been able to do an acoustic levitation though I really want to.

That's another thing, I have this amulet I made a few months ago, It's just a big ole ultrasonic transducer disk connected to a small driver circuit, it will freak out any animal like a cat or dog, it's funny to see them just jump up and take off for no apparent reason. It could be used to protect yourself from animal attacks but I've never used it for that reason. It's also mostly waterproof and when you stick the disk in water mist will be generated because of an effect called atomization.

This next one I could do right now if I wanted too, I have this "electro muscular stimulation" device which pulses low power dc into your body as a type of muscle relaxing machine but one time I modified it (not technically) so that one electrode followed an insulated conductive ink track up to the palm of my hand so that the electrode wasn't touching my skin, the ink electrode was a circle with a triangle around it and had fake spells around the sides of the triangle. The other electrode was attached to my body near my abs.  I told people that I was a Palm reader AND that I could read their destiny [:o].  I told them to use one finger and press on the ink electrode being shore not to touch anything else, then I told them to hold out their other hand so I could read it being shore to touch all over their palms. As I did that we both experienced a light pulsing sensation which fluctuated between 5 and 70 hz randomly giving the illusion that I was actually doing something magical. but in reality I was just completing the circuit between me and them with low level electrical pulses.

I have many more and better tricks which are beyond the scope of this thread. This thread is becoming rather long and cumbersome so I'll end this here. Would you be impressed by a magician which could do these things and more? I have an aspiration to become a famous magician as well as a famous scientist inventor artist.  To tell the truth I see magic and science as the same thing and I view both as an art.

Yes, I know sulfur hexafloride isn't the safest thing ever, but neither is helium believe it or not.  It is advised not to breath in either. But that's besides the point.

I want to know evan, do you think that this sort of "magic"[;)] is better then cheap card tricks, magicians glue and invisible string? With magic like this you might as well be a dang wizard.  At least that's my opinion...

What's yours?

Also If your interested in this sort of thing I have many more tricks [;D] I could reveal more if you want.  I am also seeking out new tricks too.  If you know of some obscure science that could be used for magic, please let me know.

Why would someone want to breath that? What kind of trick is it supposed to be?

(sigh!) It's bad netiquette to point out spelling errors. It's a waste of everyone's time. It's not as though I don't know how to spell breathe. Spelling errors happen for a large variety of reasons, few of them are because the person doesn't know how to spell the word. So please lay off such things. It's not very polite.

Cool tricks. Mind over matter or laviating are always making wonders.

I wonder if the whole place/Earth is charged to 10kv, how you do the trick?

Thank you, the tricks I do are sometimes wonderful, but not a lot of people see it that way. When I actually do the tricks in public it seems like people fear what I do and as a result resent my practice.

Oh and sulfur hexafloride is a trick because ones you "breathe" it in your voice turns super deep and most people have never seen someone speak wile inhaling that stuff.  It's not the greatest trick ever but if you use it in combination with other tricks you can easily appear to be a "demonic magician" which adds a bit of believability to your show.

The spelling police care not for netiquette!  ;)

But seriously, let's try to keep the discussion on the topic of discussing science and not raise hackles by correcting other users's spalling or grammer.

JP,

That's exactly my point. It's a waste of space, time and bandwidth all for nothing.

All spelling errors aside, I wonder what would happen if I amplitude modulated a ultrasonic sound wave (much like a radio wave) with the audio of a voice.

I could make a sound spotlight, It's like a laser but with sound, if I point the sound beam at you then only you would be able to hear the massage the machine is sending out. nobody else around you will be able to hear anything.  The sound also appears to be coming from inside your head, a properly set up trick with this technology could give you the illusion of being psychic easily.

For example, I could wear an amulet of several ultrasonic transducers, a miniature version of what's in the picture. I could have it hooked up to the audio of a cellphone which has dialed out to someone nearby.

The person on the phone could speak for me and make it appear as though I am speaking psychically.

I wish I could do that trick, That would blow peoples minds! [::)

There are allegedly "ultrasonic subliminal" messages which do that,
 but by-definition people cannot hear ultrasound , i.e. it's a scam.

I agree absolutely that correcting other posters’ spelling, grammar etc is not on, but I suspect that was not David’s intention.  I think he was referring to the possibility that multiple on-line usage of an incorrect spelling or construction is infectious.  We all produce “typos” from time to time; most of us have words somewhere in our vocabulary that we always spell incorrectly.  That’s just being human.

The internet has a strong and widespread influence, especially on the young.  Perhaps those of us who have a reasonable command of our language have a responsibility of care.

When we refer to “hearing something” what we really mean is that we are aware of hearing it.  We are aware of hearing something only if our auditory system sends the appropriate signal to our brain, such that it is processed by our conscious mind.  If some signals are processed unconsciously, might they not, eventually, influence our actions?

Have a look at the "ultrasonic subliminal" titles ...

It's sucker-central.

[ BTW The free preview sounds from Amazon only go up to 11KHz (full audio is normally 22KHz). So if any ultrasonic messages are present on the actual product , they won't be present on the free preview. ]

I have a hypersonic (ultrasonic) sound "laser." It is very cool, producing audible sounds in only a very narrow field. Unfortunately one has to be very meticulous in setting it up if one wants the signal to be audible for some but not others nearby--the sound reflects and scatters off of hard surfaces (though this can also be used to one's advantage, by bouncing the sound off a wall or two so people have more difficulty pinpointing the sound. It does not sound like the noises are coming from inside one's own head, however--there is definitely an outside source and one can hear the direction its coming from.

There is a different technology that uses pulses of intense microwave radiation to that very quickly heat components of the ear and head causing thermal expansion. They also cool very quickly, shrinking back down to the original size. If the pulses are fast enough and intense enough it actually generates sounds that originate **inside** the target's head. The military experimented with this in the mid 20th century, but abandoned it due to impracticalities (and hazards!). As far as I know they were able to use it to communicate with Morse code and tones, but not actually transmit voices or words.

... I wonder what would happen if I amplitude modulated a ultrasonic sound wave (much like a radio wave) with the audio of a voice.

People are not hearing the ultrasound--it is a nonlinear distortion of high frequency sound waves that produces sound waves of lower frequencies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_from_ultrasound

Also subliminal messaging is possible, it just isn't as powerful as some popular depictions...

I have no problem with accepting the status quo.  I was simply speculating as to what might, in principle, be possible.  Could it not be that our methods of testing are not yet sufficiently refined?

Obviously, such speculation is not an invitation to believe in anything against current evidence; it is no more than a nod in the direction of open-mindedness. (Not so open that one's brain falls out, of course).

I disagree that subliminal messages don't work.  But I doubt ultrasound modulated subliminal messages exist because most formats don't support ultrasound and most speakers can't make ultrasound.

The subject is deep in the "conspiracy" section of the internet though. It would be difficult to discern if there is any truth to ultrasound subliminal messages.

So lets look at another "science magic trick" That would be ultra awesome if it could be done!

When someone thinks of magic, levitation often comes to mind. Magicians have been faking the ability to fly for many years but I doubt any magician has ever actually archived a decent, legit levitation of themselves.

Of coarse levitation is possible scientifically in many ways, but most of the levitation techniques known to science are not strong enough to levitate a human being more then an inch or so off the ground.

A levitation must AT LEAST give 1 foot of levitation to the magician for it to be impressive (by my standards) AND it's got to look like MAGIC is behind the levitation. Meaning that you have to hide the technology that is levitating you (for the most part).

HOW CAN A "REAL" LEVITATION BE POSSIBLE?

I have another post lost somewhere on this forum called "scientific sorcery" which focuses on how to do this this trick for real.

I personally think that one of the only ways to archive real levitation of ones own self would be to use "quantum levitation" otherwise known as "superconductor" levitation.

Superconductor levitation is reasonably the strongest form of levitation and has been used to archive REAL human levitation in the past. But usually the levitation which is archived by using superconductors is less then an inch of flight, which is lame... [:-\]

look at this guy who thinks he is the green goblin levitating on a magnet disk over a box of superconductor bricks.

you really can't tell that he is levitating at all unless you looked really close. It just isn't very impressive. You need to levitate more in-order for the trick to amaze and astonish, It's got to be at least one foot or more so that you can clearly see the levitation.

If you used a superconductor magnet to levitate a superconductor then you can archive about 1 foot or more of levitation because a superconducting magnet can make magnetic fields exceeding 14 Tesla of magnetic strength to levitate an uncharged superconductor.

By comparison the man in the picture above is using a neodymium magnet disc (1 Tesla) to levitate about an inch over some superconductor bricks

1 Tesla = 1 inch of levitation
14 Tesla=14 inches of levitation

14 inches of levitation is good enough... But how can you levitate freely like superman.  Technically all you would have to do is make a magnetic field in the air for a superconductor to levitate on (a disembodied magnetic field) which could be generated by plasma or lasers or something... But all that is speculation, could you salve it, are you a man enough scientist to salve such an amazing question??? [:o]

Since we have already mentioned both ultrasound and levitation, I figure it makes sense to post a link to a youtube video of levitation with ultrasound!

I wouldn't try levitating anything living though...
