How do you treat stargardt disease?
« on: 25/11/2014 23:30:01 »
Rudi asked the Naked Scientists:
I'm diagnosed with stargardt disease. I was told there's no help for me. I've found out about treatment in turkey with electro acupincture. Do you know anything about it I'm desperate.

What do you think?

I'd skip the acupuncture.  One of the things about alternative medicine is that it can have strong placebo effects, and the "studies" are poorly controlled.  I presume there are plateaus with the disease progression, and some people are affected worse than others.

A person going into spontaneous remission might be reported as a success by the acupuncture trial, while those that aren't helped might be ignored.

It does sound like there is current research with respect to Stargardt disease, both with respect to stem cell therapy as well as pharmacological therapy.

I'd encourage you to try to get in touch with some of the researchers about possible inclusion with the current research studies.
