Can You Help Identifying This.. Rock?
« on: 25/02/2015 19:40:55 »
My husband and I live in New Mexico. Last weekend, we were out off-roading. When we see something of interest, we usually stop and examine it.

We found this. It's tiny. About the size of a penny.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.  [8)]

Some sort of mold.  Can you scratch the brown rock with a knife?
Old enough to have a grandson
Slow enough to study rocks
Thirsty enough to find a pub

Thank you for your reply.

I scratched it with a knife and it appeared more red.  I took a pic:

My guess is hematite (iron oxide) as well.  I assume it's not magnetic.
