Explosions and Geraniums?
« on: 03/10/2006 20:56:14 »
Hey, this is kinda random, but does anyone know if there is a simple way to synthesize the organic molecule that smells like geraniums in an impressive display of exploding (or burning, sparking or just really cool looking but still safe) chemicals.  This would be a great demo/science project if I could make it work.  Actually, any flower smell would do; or vanillin or something that smells good like that.

An explosion followed by the smell of geraniums is bad news:-

" Lewisite is a chemical compound from a chemical family called arsines. While it is a colorless and odorless liquid when pure it is usually found as an oily, brown liquid with a distinct odor similar to geraniums. It is a chemical weapon, acting as a vesicant (blister agent) and lung irritant, and can be used in combination as mustard-lewisite.

It can easily penetrate ordinary clothing and even rubber; upon skin contact it causes immediate pain and itching with a rash and swelling. Blisters develop after 12 hours, and discomfort lasts for 2 to 3 days. Sufficient absorption can cause systemic poisoning leading to liver necrosis or death. "

Well, I was looking more to make geraniol or something that smelled like it (not a chemical weapon).

Why  ageranium smell, as they are not really pleasnat smelling flowers, they kind a stink.. I have never found one that was sweet smelling, like lilacs or roses, geraniums have that harder oder like some strong green leafy plant! Do they actually have pleasant smelling geraniums these days!

No real reason it has to be geraniums.  I just thought it'd be kinda neat to make an explosion smell like flowers instead of like NO2 or SO2.
